Dec 18, 2013 9:00 AM in response to Lexiepexby hausamgern,You are absolutely right, I had the same issue with LaCie 4Big set on RAID 5, wiped blank and renamed MyBook as soon as I plugged in after upgrading to Mavericks some weeks ago. Since, I cleaned my MacBook Retina from all WD software, hopefully, I ran EtreCheck and found something of interest in the kernel extensions: com.oxsemi.driver.OxsemiDeviceType00 (1.28.13 - SDK 10.5)
I made a quick search on the internet and found:
WD/Oxsemi FireWire HID compatible device - drivers for windows 7
still got WD software on my MacBook?
BTW I tried nearly everything to recover my lost data, got best results with Data Rescue 3, a deep scan even could retbuild the structure, but unfortunately all (video)files are corrupted...
best

Dec 18, 2013 9:08 AM in response to hausamgernby estApple,"LaCie 4Big set on RAID 5, wiped blank and renamed MyBook"
This implies that you might have installed WD software before and have not completely removed it from your system.
The "legacy" WD software might have acted on your LaCie.

Dec 18, 2013 9:17 AM in response to Lexiepexby estApple,"yes very easy that way, but I am avoiding running Raids."
I previously thought RAID 1 is a very safe path. But no longer so after this event.
A staff in an Apple dealer told me recently that it is better to have two separate disks than two disks in RAID 1 because they are tied to the same knot. If the knot breaks, both will go down with it. I now tend to agree with her. Well that means I have to backup a disk from time to time. Maybe the software RAID in Disk Utilities is better than a hardware RAID 1 in this sense. At least it is part of the facilities from the OS.

Dec 18, 2013 9:28 AM in response to hausamgernby Basilic,Want to get rid of any WD sw remnants? Go straight to the point with the following Terminal commands as a search with the Finder is not as efficient:
sudo find -x / -iname com.wdc.\*
sudo find -x / -iname com.westerndigital.\*
sudo find -x / -iname com.wd\*
and manually trash all if anything found as the official WD uninstaller doesn't uninstall all, empty the bin and reboot-.
As a reminder all WD related pieces can be found in those directories:
/Library/Application Support
/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/Preferences
/Library/PriviledgedHelperTools
/Library/StartupItems/
/System/Library/Extensions
Also, don't remove something called "wdhelper" that is unrelated to WD

Dec 18, 2013 9:40 AM in response to Basilicby Lexiepex, maybe it is easier to find WD related files by using FindAnyFile, which finds any file as the name says.
And check all that FAF finds but some might not be WesternDigital.

Dec 18, 2013 10:16 AM in response to Lexiepexby Basilic,Similar tool as FindAnyFile proved to me not to find all WD files, typically in /Library/PriviledgedHelperTools.
Instead of those sexy tools, use plain Terminal commands. That doesn't cheat.

Dec 18, 2013 10:27 AM in response to Tom in Londonby PlotinusVeritas,Tom in London wrote:
drives made by others, and not only drives made by WD, are experiencing the same problem.
Tom, this is called cross-contamination to a non-WD drive by WD software.
A reformat of a Seagate drive by WD software resident on Mavericks implicates neither Mavericks nor any HD, rather the WD software.
You need to realize that no HD is at fault; WD, Seagate, Toshiba or Hitachi
No physical HD by any mfg. is under implication in any post in this thread. Hard drives dont affect other hard drives or even they themselves, rather software does; in this case WD-ware
WD has confessed to their error
WD has released new software
Users need to 'clean up' the WD-ware and be proactive after the fact, as per this error lingering in some cases.
Use logic and reasoning in determining a chain of causation.
Peace

Dec 18, 2013 10:25 AM in response to Basilicby Drew Reece,Your report shows no WD software. You do have a lot of other items though (some are out of date - like Soundflower). Create a new thread if you want to clean up this Mac.
I think Oxsemi may be related to WD, but I have no idea what you have installed, or what it is needed for. On Windows it looks like a Firewire driver, but the Mac usually has these in the OS.

That's what YOU call it.
The issue is happening to Seagate drives with people who don't have any WD software on their system. Your over-confidence fails to inspire.

Dec 18, 2013 1:09 PM in response to PlotinusVeritasby peppermint, not only wd "mybooks" and wd raids are affected, also mypassport 2,5" drives.
i nearly ve been doing all tips here, to mount my wd drives in 10.9.1, but it would not work at the end.
i can mount them on the old mbair of my wife with 10.8.5
i am thinking about selling my wd drives, i am not willing to wait another 3 month now for wd to deliver new firmware/driver/software and buy lacie drives. i already have 6 lacie drives in my office, and all of them are working fine with mavericks, i can mount and work with them without any problem.
alltogether i ve been using at least 15 different lacie drives in the last 10 years and i never had problems with them. (apart from one hardware failiure, which was referring to the controller in the drive, thats 1 dead harddrive controller in 10 years)

Passport (no such thing different from any HD) WD dont need any software. No need to wait for any software. Offload any data on those drives and format them and connect. Any mounting issue would be BUS or SATA card issue, possibly an indexing issue, nothing to do with the WD drive.
Mounting issue is something different than the core of this thread.
LaCie is just a Seagate drive, Seagate owns them and puts their drives in Lacie boxes.
Terms such as: "WD Passport, Expansion drive, Seagate Backup Plus, PC hard drive, Mac hard drive, Free agent, backup drive, Passport plus, Elements, Toshiba Canvio, Slim, ultraslim, pocket drive, Touro" etc. etc.
all these terms are cotton fuzz and bunny fluff,..... they dont designate or mean anything. Its a sales tactic used by WD, Seagate, Toshiba, and Hitachi
just HD bricks inside plastic or metal boxes with fancy 'La-di-da' names.

Dec 18, 2013 1:51 PM in response to PlotinusVeritasby peppermint,i know. what i dont know is the difference if my discs are not being able to get mounted OR being corrupted by mavericks, as my discs are completely empty since weeks. no data on it.
it cannot be a bus or sata card issue, i have 2 brandnew macs, shipped 4 weeks ago and i can mount my other 5 lacie drives well. also i swapped one wd drive 8 days ago, by warranty, as i thought its ill (due to the no-mount).
i can mount the 2 wd drives (i drop the term "mypassport") with 10.8, but not with 10.9. i even tested it with 2 different mavericks macs ( but i can mount all my lacie drives on the same mac with 10.9)
so i presume it must be the driver in 10.9? i guess there is a default harddisc driver working in 10.9?
edit: by the way: i could not work with the wd discs from the very first day, i got the new macs. with no software installed except 10.9, fresh coming
from apple, then i connected my wd drives and they did not show up. (but lacie drives showed up)
thanks

Dec 18, 2013 2:11 PM in response to peppermintby PlotinusVeritas,Yes, separate mounting issue.
Did you:
1. format in MacOSX ext. journal these WD drives?
2. These are USB externals, correct? Not Firewire?
such as:
http://www.amazon.com/Passport-Portable-External-Storage-FireWire/dp/B005ELBSWO
FIrewire drives, some, are encountering mounting issues and sleep issues in Mavericks.
3. did you run Etrecheck to verify anything installed?
You have verified eliminatively, these ext. WD drives will mount on any system other than 10.9, so no bus or SATA issue relation.
As for your earlier post, yes, in the future avoid WD consumer grade drives. Their "black" server grade drives are premium, otherwise, no.
Stick to Hitachi, Toshiba or Seagate
Hitachi is the winner in hard drive reliability survey:
Hitachi manufacturers the safest and most reliable hard drives, according to the Storelab study. Of the hundreds of Hitachi hard drives received, not a single one had failed due to manufacturing or design errors. Adding the highest average lifespans and the best relationship between failures and market share, Hitachi can be regarded as the winner.
(Hitachi and Toshiba used currently by Apple for Mac mini, non-retina Macbook Pro and Time Capsule)
