    @a brody,

Can you add the 'find command' to the User Tip that covers this issue (https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6202)

    Either Basilic's 3 lines…

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24169618#24169618

    or my one liner…

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24086650#24086650

People can also use Find Any File or other 3rd party apps etc, but I think the built in tools are a good place to start looking.

@Asiak-Hanno, the commands in the posts above should show you any installed WD files.

My fsck_hfs.log file was normal.   So I am not sure why my TM partition is failing.

  • RussW Level 1 Level 1 (5 points)

Two threads on this issue, posting to both.

I am now in the crowd of catastrophic data losers from Mavericks and Western Digital. I have lost two WD drives using Mavericks in the last two weeks. One on the MacPro internal bus (startup), the other on a external esata bus (10,000+ image files). Both, when viewed in disk utility, show partitions renamed by unknown source as TM BU or similar. TM BU is my drive name for my Time Machine backups.

I see lots of complaints here, but few actual solutions. Other than data recovery, with which, filenames may or may not come back. This makes the data recovery option useless for me on 10,000 image files. I do have a 10 day old clone as a fall back.

My drives are internal bare drives, used in a Weibe 2 bay enclosure, formatted with Apple DiskUtility. NO WD SOFTWARE PRESENT ON MY SYSTEM, NOW OR IN THE PAST.

I looked in Console for fsck_hfs, no occurances.

My actions are going to be the following...

-boot into mountain lion clone and see if the "broken" partition shows up correctly. Copy data

-attempt DiskWarrior repair on "broken" partition, if an easy fix can be achieved, mount and copy data.

-boot into mavericks start up, use back drive (10,000 images) to copy to SEAGATE drive and use it as hero drive, perhaps repurpose suspect WD drives as back up drives

Any other ideas/solutions are welcome. My weekend, now shot to ****, for the second time in two weeks. Russ

To be more specific, does anyone have a routine or two to try before I revert back to my clone? Where on this topic? With 84 pages, I see some hints at solutions, but no GO TO list of things to try. Thanks.

    Hey Russ,

To give you an answer to your last question, try reading the last 10-20 pages at the most, of this discussion and you will have all the tips everyone has given.

Something else to try, since you have DiskWarrior, is to press option before pressing the "Rebuild" button:

    Regular:

    Screen shot 2014-02-01 at 4.41.29 PM.png

    After pressing Option key:

    Screen shot 2014-02-01 at 4.41.54 PM.png

This will enable an extra menu to come up when pressed:

    Screen shot 2014-02-01 at 4.37.36 PM.png

Now select the Scavenge command and try rebuilding this way.

I have not heard of anyone actually trying recovery using the Scavenge command explicitly yet (I could have missed one but I don't remember any). Let us know how it goes.

See my post above & use the find commands to be 100% certain no WD tools are installed (it can't hurt to double check). It's odd that your disks are renamed to 'TM BU'.

Your are right to boot into an OS before 10.9, GetRealBro's experience makes it a wise starting point.

It's possible your failure is unrelated to 10.9, but I'd want to rule 10.9 out as it seems to be an unknown agent at the moment.

Use Disk Warrior's preview function to mount a 'repaired copy' to avoid writing data back to the disk - this can reduce the possibility of any recovery (ideally you would use a write blocker to prevent this in hardware, but they are not cheap and you need a second disk to recover onto). I have used the preview mode to copy data off a disk in the past, it meant I could use other repair/ scan tools on the disk after using DW. Install DW to the OS & run from it from there so you can use regular tools to copy data. I'd try to avoid repairing until you are sure it is all intact (compare it to the old backup), just keep the clone somewhere safe and away from 10.9.

The catalog is where the filenames are stored, so if you plan to try to recover on your own that would be a good place to start, Disk Drill should let you see if it can be recovered for free cleverfiles.com

Some other free tools can be found at http://www.cgsecurity.org if you know your way around the command line. Photorec can search for file headers (e.g. file carving = no filenames, but the file data should be available) & TestDisk will attempt to do catalog recovery.

  • RussW Level 1 Level 1 (5 points)

I did use Terminal to search for WD software, none.

My boot into Mountain Lion Clone proved fruitless. Same deal, ghosted partition in Disk Utility called TM BU.

However, my first boot into ML Clone was clean and fast. Oddly, second boot into ML Clone brought up safe boot progress bar. This last boot into ML Clone was preceeded with an accidental boot into Mavericks (which was set as default start up), where the ML Clone disk did not mount as it should have. Very odd. Eventually, the ML Clone, after safe boot, was fine, but as mentioned above, no help on bad external partition.

Cloning the RAW 03-04 BU (problem child) partition now to a fresh Seagate drive as new hero. Can then dig into failed RAW 03-04 (original) drive partition if need be.

Though I am beginning to think the RAW 03-04 BU is up to date (now that I have seen its contents) and am thinking to cut my losses here and move forward. However, the state of my workflow seems to be in jeopardy, am afraid to use my computer now for fear of loosing more drives/partitions.

Is there a hardware (full system) check software I should run? Thanks.

  • Drew Reece Level 5 Level 5 (4,735 points)

Apple Hardware Test should be available…

    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509

Others have said that it has flaws, but it's what Apple run to see if the hardware is OK. It won't do anything to verify the OS.

Disk Utility's First Aid & Repair is OK in Recovery mode. The alternatives would be tools like Techtool Pro, Disk Drill, Spinrite etc.

Rember will do more RAM testing…

    http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember/

If you can migrate to using the new disk that should rule out the old disks as a failure point, then consider if you can work in 10.9 or setup an earlier OS to work from. It doesn't make much sense that multiple disks could fail at once, but sometimes things just have no connection (or it could be the Mac itself I'm sorry to say).

Do you have any panic logs in Console? See if anything leaps out within system.log around the time of the reboot.

The 'safe boot' sounds like it was rebuilding kernal caches or fscking etc. It may occur if the system is failing or was unable to shutdown cleanly. If that continues consider creating a new thread, since this one is so long, it may help to get some system info incase you have a known bad model. Just link to it from here.

Apple nor WD were no help to me at all... Even though they have a ticket/trouble number made for me, it didn't make any difference... Both companies reps told me they'll follow up and help me get my data back... That did not happen at all... I heard that the longer you wait to recover data, the more you could lose.. So after almost a month, I gave up and just purchased a data recovery myself... stellar Phoenix. Pricey though but worth it for recovering important memories and docs stored on my extHD.

To those who are still trying to recover data from this Mavs/WD mess, good luck...

    Take care everyone..

Apple Hardware Test should be available…

    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509

Instructions do not work on my machine, a folder with ? flashes briefly before the Apple logo, then takes me to log in, then to my desktop. Tried it twice. I have an SSD drive as start up. Would that get in the way?

  • RussW Level 1 Level 1 (5 points)

Ok, digging into the 2nd of my drives (most recent) to have failed, the RAW 03-04 partition that went grey in Disk Utility, I finally had sufficient back ups to touch it. I ran Disk Utility verify and then repair. Errors were found and IT FIXED THE DRIVE! Renaming it back to RAW 03-04 from its phantom corrupted name TM BU. Here is the DU log process... DU called it minor repairs. Anyone put a name to this?

Russ, the flashing question mark means it cannot find the startup drive that was selected in System Preferences. To correct that, just go into System Preferences and into Startup Disk. Then select your startup drive. That will solve the flashing question mark.

Why the Apple Hardware Test doesn't work? I cannot answer that one directly since it has always worked for me. Are you sure that you followed the intructions properly for you OS and MacPro? Unless your second install DVD is damaged it should work.

This whole HD business is driving me nutso.  I have a My Book Studio 1TB....it used to work fine until I switched to Mavericks and then it all went into the toilet on me.  And guess what, WD has been absolutely no help at all.  They say that have engineers working on the problems that WD drives have with Mavericks but as of today, nothing has been accomplished I don't think.  They just keep giving me a bunch of BS while tentatively admitting that their HDs are having issues with Mavericks.  It sounds like some users on these forums are able to fix the problems or are not really experiencing them....sure don't understand that.  When I try to understand what some of the contributers on here are suggesting as fixes I just get lost in all the acronyms and engineering gibberish.  I can't understand why this outfit WD can't fix the problems.  Any thoughts?  Suggestions?
