Nov 19, 2013 6:17 PM in response to GetRealBroby PlotinusVeritas,~~~~Please don't tar my Seagates with that WD brush
FWIW, I just completed my last data extraction from these drives by creating a compressed read only .dmg of a 470ish GB Time Machine backup
As stated much earlier, none of this issue has even a single iota of indication of causation related in and of the actual mechanical HD itself alone, be it WD, Seagate, Toshiba, or Hitachi. While Im not keen on WD build quality of their consumer grade HD (however the WD black are top rated server-grade HD),.... there isnt a single point of evidence that WD drives alone have any bearing whatsoever in/regarding this issue.
Their control software in conjunction with Mavericks, YES,....their WD mechanical drives, NO.
Mechanical WD drives or Seagate mechanical drives isnt any cause related to this issue.
Im glad you mentioned .DMG (however compression isnt necessary). I have been unable to recreate data failure on many drives. If someone with a known corrupted drive that has already been scanned and recovered could try this, create a .DMG of a package of data on a formatted drive.
There is strong likelihood that a disk image file (.dmg) containing data archives may very likely be completely immune from this issue.
You can create a .dmg using the APP "Drop DMG" or any one of another methods.

Based on the info below I am afraid they may be focused on the wrong issues...
From Mac Rumors and others:
Apple has seeded the first beta of OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 to developers. The release asks testers to focus on Mail, Graphics Drivers and VoiceOver, though there are no known issues with the release.
Earlier this month, Apple released a special update to Mavericks to address issues using Gmail with the Mail.app client built into the OS.
The update is available to registered developers through the OS X Developer Portal.

Ignore those press releases disguised as a news story. They tell us nothing. If Apple is to blame for this, it will never admit it. It can't. That's the way the world works.
Oh wait. There was that issue with iOS Maps... Hmmmmm.

Maybe you missed the emoticon smiley in that first line (since you didn't include it in your quote). It was meant as a joke.

FWIW I always compress my .dmg snap shots of a Time Machine backup because they take up less space than the orginal TM file structure. In this case the compressed read only .dmg was 385GB vs 470ishGB for the orginal TM. 50ishGB here and 50ishGB there. Pretty soon it adds up to real disk space

Nov 20, 2013 12:03 AM in response to Trocafishby miglio74,i found this tuts:
"I have solved my problem, and I have recover my lost partitions, and all my data!
My solution here, try and let me know if it get fix for you too.
Add "/Volumes" into spotlight privacy (since ext HDs are mounted under this folder).
So open up terminal and enter: "open /Volumes"
The above command will open a finder window containing /Volumes. Drag and drop that folder into Spotlight.
After that connect again your hard drives with lost data and lost partitions.
They will probably still don't mount, but you can go to the disk utility. You will see the partitions back but unmounted. Repair the hard drive, repair de partitions, try to mount them again... I had to try to repair two times and try to mount another couple of times... But finally I got my 2 lost partitons back!
My hard drive is a WD My Passport 1Tb with 3 partitions. Good luck!"
what do u think?

Nov 20, 2013 5:43 AM in response to petermac87by ttd mediamusic,This is what I have going on. I record music, Im using a Lacie rugged for my ext drive, which is mounted to the firewire port that seems to be working ok. I also have a Lacie FW 800 express card that I use in the slot that my sound board connects to. When the card is in the slot it is not mounting therfore I get no power to the soundboard. When I disconnect the rugged from the FW port and connect to the express card I get nothing. I didnt have that issue until the upgrade. Read a couple forums that said its occuring with some of the older macbook pro, mine is a mid 2010 6,1 and that the upgrade didnt include the drivers for express cards.

Nov 20, 2013 5:56 AM in response to ttd mediamusicby angus_stirling,OK. I'd give that a try. I had issues with outboard gear unmounting in my edit suite but resetting the PRAM seemed to cure it. (Unfortunately I then discovered that there were unresolvable issues with Adobe software that meant I had to uninstall Mavericks..)
Make sure you disconnect all your peripherals before you do...

Nov 20, 2013 6:00 AM in response to angus_stirlingby ttd mediamusic,ok I'll give it a try! FYI im using a Presonus 1642 digital board with Studio One2 and Protools and alot of VST's.
I did have some issues with saving to the ext drive but i guess it fixed itself
I'll give the PRAM reset a try and keep you informed
Thanks
Johnny

pram or smc reset wont solve anything as per express card connection

Nov 20, 2013 10:18 AM in response to Trocafishby GetRealBro,A funny thing happened on the way to partition one of the drives that Mavericks would not mount/verify or repair for the last several days…
In the course of using 10.6.8 to extract the data (easy) and Time Machine backups (more difficult) from the two Seagate drives that Mavericks was unable to mount/verify/repair, one of them even had trouble mounting in 10.6.8. But yesterday, despite 10.6.8’s Disk Utility complaining about being unable to mount or verify this disk, it actually did show up on the desktop. So I quickly attached another Seagate FW800 drive and created a compressed, read-only .dmg containing the Time Machine backups (the last remaining data I needed to extract from this drive). I have spot checked restoring data from the TM.dmg
Today before partitioning this drive, I tried mounting it in Mavericks (10.9) using a USB base and was very surprised to see that it mounted without drama and could be verified by the 10.9 Disk Utility. Which begs the question…. what changed?
Note: During my previous attempts to mount this drive in 10.9 and 10.6.8 I had used both USB and FW800 interfaces (in the interchangeable bases) with no noticeable difference. I used a FW800 interface when actually extracting the data while running 10.6.8 for the increased speed and my confidence in Snow Leopard.
