Dec 10, 2013 5:29 PM in response to lkruppby estApple,I have learned a hard lesson here. I used RAID 1 because I thought that redundancy would put me in a comfort zone. If one hard disk fails, I would have a surviving one to fall back to. But no. I was absolutely wrong. So I asked myself again, what should I do from here. I think I would have a further backup even with a RAID 1 drive. Then there is another thought.
What would have happened even if I had a further backup. After finding that the WD RAID 1 was turned into empty, I would most likely put on the further backup disk, which might also be turned into empty. The nature of the cause of the problem (OS?) would catch many people in surprise. So the real lesson is: do not jump on the wagon too early. Wait for a few months unless the update/upgrade is security related. We do not need "better functions" urgently.
Thank you Apple for the free upgrade to Mavericks. I moved from Windows to Mac because I was looking for a more stable environment. It turned out to be the most eventful experience.
Unlike many, I am quite lucky this time because I just moved all my data to hard disks of higher capacity before the upgrading to Marvericks. Most of my data are still on the disks that I put away. I just lost a few weeks' work.

I'm not sure what you mean by this (1) but it has been well established that the sudden reformat problem is linked to the WD utility software, not the drives' firmware.
(2) I think you have lost track of what this topic is about
(3) It is not that they didn't implement data redundancy, it is that that redundancy was wiped out.
1. You need to read the post a little closer before making a comment, it was stated:
"new era of issues" Referring to the (Dec 8th I recall) new release of WD firmware causing a "new era" of issues specific to WD (some) drives.
As to the premise of this thread, it in fact is not "well established" (as you wrongly proclaim) or at least not reported as "source for all occurances or even most" FOUND.
So that is an additional false statement.
As for your (2.) ....The parallel premise of this thread is data protection and the other half resolving this occurrence, as such, is fitting.
(3) Very wrong. That definition does not fit the term in connotation of data REDUNDANCY. Secondary data on a single external HD or RAID array is not a redundancy, but a PRIMARY data copy. First Redundancy takes place on a Secondary storage medium/locus. (both of these external of course)
2nd level protection in any redundancy necessitates it "be unconnected" period
Data ON the actual computer is not considered, ergo a single copy OFF a computer is just that, a backup / copy. Redunancy begins as secondary to a FIRST COPYSuggested readings on data protection.

Dec 10, 2013 5:38 PM in response to beejaysooby estApple,"when I contacted WD for advice they suggested I hold off on connecting the WD drive."
Did the WD staff mean not coonecting even with the latest WD Drive Manage software? If this is true, it is horrifying because it would mean that even WD is not sure whether its latest update has resolved the issue or not.
I think I better go back to Lion or even Snow Leopard for now if I need to connect external drives.

Dec 10, 2013 5:58 PM in response to mikkibarryby estApple,WD Mybook Studio II (2x3T RAID 1 with 3 partitions) was turned into empty. I took one disk out and leave the other insde the box. The iMac can still see the WD with one partition but empty with the now famous name of "Mybook".
I used the free version of Disk Drill to scan the Studio II. It scanned for more than half a day. It gave a list of files that it had detected. I inspected the list. Most of the files could be found in the list with information like sizes and data of file creation. But the file names and the partition and directory structure were all gone. However, it grouped files into categories such as music, photo with sub-groups like jpeg NEF, ... etc. This would help a bit to reorganizing things.
I am thinking of purchasing it to recover the files and for future use.
But I may try more to see whether there is one, which is smarter to recover the files names and directory structure as well.

Dec 10, 2013 6:01 PM in response to jadbel3by estApple,Thank you for your reply. You have been very hepful.
Just out of curiosity.
Is the disk that you used Migration Assistant to operate on a startup disk?

Dec 10, 2013 6:22 PM in response to Trocafishby MacUser4_20,Had this issue happen to me on a retina with external seagate. mounted drive, drive went grey, reappeared as MyBook, erased drive. I have spent 14 hous performing data recovery on the external drive. Obviously an issue with Apple!!!
-
Dec 10, 2013 6:26 PM in response to estAppleby jadbel3,Your welcome estApple.
The Migration Assistant is on the new computer with Mavericks. So it's the latest one.
Just a side note, I've been watching some youtube videos of older but similar problems of external HD's not being recognized. Probably wouldn't have anything to do with our problem but you never know watching some old school stuff. Here's a link to one of them. I believe this guy is talking about a PC though. Listen to how this guy solved his problem, might give us some ideas. Here's the link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCx3GOcRMIk
Also, did you or anybody see this link below from Mac rumors saying "Western Digital Releases New Hard Drive Software After Mavericks Data Loss"?

You could be right, however other users have said they had no WD software only to find out they had some running from years ago that was caried over via migrations etc.
Can you run EtreCheck and see if you have any WD Software listed as startup items or launchd jobs?
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
It won't give you definititve proof (it could be installed but not running) but it will show any active software. Post it here if you need feedback.

I think the WD uninstaller leaves some jobs in place too, so if you remove via that tool check again for more com.westerndigital.WD jobs!

Dec 10, 2013 7:05 PM in response to MacUser4_20by Drew Reece,The launch deamon has gone, but what about the tools it was loading? How did you clear this out?
WD have 'uninstallers', however they also create another background job that does who knows what. That was being discussed in the link you posted.
@PlotinusVeritas, @a brody,
Can we create a list of paths to remove to get rid of this WD software and turn it into a 'user tip' (or append it to a brody's tip)?
The WD uninstaller creates extra 'uninstaller jobs'. I don't trust their tools or their attitude to running low level modifications.
Keeping track of what locations are installed by WD in this thread is a nightmare.

Dec 10, 2013 7:12 PM in response to Drew Reeceby MacUser4_20,there was a wdddrivemanager in the applications support folder, and after adding it to trash, it started running while checking activity monitor. killed it from activity monitor and emptied trash. I cannot find any other residual WDD stuff, but I am sure there must be something hidden somewhere.Thank you for your help. Any other suggestions would be great. I still think there is something to it running on Mavericks, as it obviously has not happened before, and most people on here, until recently. coincidence or what?
Thanks for all your help. I am crossing fingers that my 700+GB of data revoers. has been running 15 hours....
