Keychain reset does not work

Can't reset my keychain. Just upgraded to Mavericks, had to restart for an iTunes update and everything went downhill from there.

dozens of applications ask for access to 'local items', my user password doesn't work and i tried a few other passwords that it might have been, but i know i used my user password before installing mavericks, but that's not working.

Went online to try to find answers, got pointed to the 'reset my default keychain', clicked it and the program asked for the password for 'local items' keychain, tried my user password again, didn't work. The 'Login' keychain is now gone completely, it disappeared. Clicking 'reset my default keychain' brings the popup 'specified keychain could not be found', so that won't work anymore.

Looked for some more answers, one pointed to deleting the keychain entirely, which i tried but the option to delete 'local items' is greyed out.

Attempted keychain first aid, it asks for a password to access 'local items'. after trying my user password again, it didn't work. now the first aid displays an error message every time i attempt a repair. here's the text from my latest attempt:

after that, i restarted my computer, when i put my username to login to my account, i got asked to provide the keychain password for 'local items'. This happened while i was logging in and the computer refused to log into the account until i pressed the 'cancel' button.

Nothing is working, what do i do?

As a side note, i either want to unlock the 'local items' keychain or i want to stop messages from popping up, which i attempted and again hit the 'local items' password wall. I also can't check 'allow user to reset password using Apple ID' because the option is greyed out even after unlocking it to change items.

Hi ralfjnr, not sure if you have resolved this, if not, it's a good idea to post a new question to the forum rather than tack it on to the end of someone else's question. That way you will get people looking at it as an un-answered question. Hopefull you will then get some help, cheers.

After trying several random fixes, I stumbled on this same one more or less by accdient (wish I'd seen this first!) and it worked. Ironically, I didn't have the keychain issue unitl upgrading to 10.9.1, which is supposed to fix the problem!

We had resolved the issue by deleting the “login” items component of “Keychain”. Doing so means having to rebuild the new component item by item on log in to various sites and sources, but at least the prompt is gone.

Thank you so much shellcode!!

I have been coping with annoying popups for about 2 months now!! Took it to Apple store and they did a temporary fix and said it would need to have a full Mavericks reinstall if it came back. Came back a couple of weeks later 😟

Just did this though and it seems to have worked, let's hope it stays this way! Such a simple fix too!!

Cant even find a folder that is /library/keychains or anything like it.....

"Shellcode" proposed a solution using Terminal that seems to have worked for me. If you can't see the Library folder in your home folder, that's probably because its a hidden folder. You can either change your settings to show all hidden files and folders and then delete (or move) the file in ~/library/keychains with the long alpha-numeric name, or use shellcode's eloquent command line approach then close open apps and restart your Mac. As always, before doing anything like this, make a backup (Time Machine, etc.). Hope this helps.

Open terminal
cd ~/Library/Keychains
ls
1. When you 'ls' here you will see a folder that contains a bunch of random number liks so:
2. 94ED610F-DD96-4ECF-A2BC-7D2F8651A464 (this number is unique on each system)
rm -rf 94ED610F-DD96-4ECF-A2BC-7D2F8651A464
Reboot
<when you log back in everything should be back to normal>

what Is/ whats rm?

i go to ~library/keychains

delete that folder, didn't work

the pop up doesn't come as much but now and then it does, usually its calander agent.

Any ideas?

They are unix commands...

ls means list and will show the contents of the folder you are in.

rm means remove...

Hello, as many i started having this problem put of the blue with Mavericks.

I tried every solution you indicated here.

I deleted the weird folder in ~library/keychain, reset the password in the keychain app, completely logged out from icloud...

What is happening now is this:

if I start the computer and log in WITH internet connection on. I immediately receive all the messages and I have all the folders in my account locked and inaccessible. Plus if I try to get into icloud in system configuration, the panel never appear and the system configuration freeze

If I start and log in WITHOUT internet connection on... everything works perfectly for 4-5 hours, then suddenly the problem rises again.

If I log in and leave the compuer without internet I can work as log as I like without problem

What can I do?

I posted this weeks ago. It worked for us. It's done within Keychain Access.

Unluckily it didn't work for me...

I tried this again and also I deleted every iten in the two keychains folder in my mac

Any idea about what else can I do?
