I had windows 8 installed through boot camp on my 2011 mac book air, and had no troubles. Updating to windows 8.1, there were a lot of issues, especially no track pad support, so I couldn't even right click without a mouse. I just ended up uninstalling boot camp and filled my SSD to just OSX. I'm installing windows 7 instead right now, besides windows 7 is better for any device without a touch screen.

This is ridiculous that Apple comes out with a whole new operating system like this and isn't even prepared for events like this. Yes, people have a preferance of software, hardware, however when it comes to an operating system like this it is time to fix it. I will be extremely dissapointed if apple doesn't create a new version of bootcamp that will support windows 8.1.

I am running Win 8.1 on MacBook Pro 2010 and MacBook Pro 2013. On the 2013 machine the install was flawless. Only thing that doesn't work is Wi-Fi. Doesn't seem to have installed a driver. That's what I'm working on now.

On the 2010 machine, I had to trick the installer. Started like I was installing Win 7, then after re-boot, I shut the machine down. I re-booted to Mac OS(Maverick). I inserted Win 8.1 DVD that I downloaded from MS and burned with my Mac. I set the startup device to the DVD and re-booted. Win 8.1 Installer started and completed. I downloaded the correct BootCamp drivers to a FAT32 Formatted USB and ran the Setup. Voila! My MacBook Pro 2010 is running Maverick and Win 8.1....Hope this helps.

I'm running Windows 8.1 on a new 2013 iMac. Everything works including WiFi. Here are a couple issues I ran into. Apple has a chart which shows which Bootcamp drivers you need based on the system you have. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634 I was impatient and downloaded the 5.0.5033 driver package but several drivers didn't work on my iMac including WiFi. It took several hours to download the correct drivers using Bootcamp Assistant. It seems like it's hung and not working but it does eventually download. Once installed everything worked. Bootcamp partitioning didn't work the first time, I had to reboot before it worked. Make sure your USB drives are formatted with FAT32 and that you have the correct driver package and you should be good to go with 8.1.

Apple isn't writing Windows 8.1. Apple doesn't know what APIs or system structures are changing in Windows 8.1 until Windows 8.1 is released. Does Apple have access to the betas or the developer releases? Maybe. Does Apple have access to the source? No. Besides, I wouldn't write system-level drivers for an OS that's still in development when I had millions of people relying on those drivers working properly. I would wait until the OS is finalized and released, write drivers to that release, and make sure that they're working reliably. I would rather Apple wait and release them when they're usable rather than sit down and try to get work done only to have my Mac splutter and drool on itself. Proverbially, of course.

From Italy. Other Problems. I have a 13" rMBP 2,8GHz.

Before installation, I called AC, and they told me that there is compatibility between W8.1 & Mavericks.

So, i bought W8.1.(119.00euro)

I' ve installed W8.1 with a USB created on a my friend 64bitPC with window, and than I used boot camp normaly.

Windows run, but i have some graphic problems, and, first of all, a lot of programs that run on W7, don't run on my partition.

After, i called again AC, and they told me that is normal the incompatibility beetween the new windows systems and Macintosh. They apologized for the inconvenience, and i was advised to install W8 or lower versions.

In conclusion, we have to wait if we wont to see W8.1 on macbook.

But a simple answer by apple would be well accepted.

For those who are doing mutiple installations of Windows 8.x you can legitimately use these product keys for the installation. They do not activate windows but they will stop you killing the activation limit on your real key until you are happy with your Bootcamp installation.

334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT for Core/Home

XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB for Professional

To Apple, these are legitimate generic installation only Windows keys. They will allow you to install Windows 8.x/Windows 8.x Professional for a small trial period which is ample of time to activate your product with your proper Windows 8.x product key.

The bootcamp problem still exists. We cannot get an 8.1 bootcamp install to work reliably on a late 2013 Mac Book Pro (Retina)
