Problems with iPhoto after Maverick installation

What version do you have?

If your computer is set to another language, set it to English and try again.

same problem, changing the lenguage to english i can only update imovie and aperture, but no sings of iphoto...what can i do?

I haven't been able to update my iPhoto because I may have purchased it using a different apple ID which apple seems to have no record of, so the advice was to re-purchase it. Bad advice. Now with the Mavericks update I can't open iPhoto either and get the same crossed out icon. In the app store it doesn't give the option to purcahse, just to update which I can't do. Hesitate to delete iphoto for fear of issues with photo organzing, etc.

Nope, just comiserating; the original post may have the same issue as I do—unrecognized multiple apple IDs.

I've talked to apple about this and their advice is to 're-purchase'.

Unfortunately, after making this post and talking further with apple this afternoon, 're-purchasing' also doesn't seem to work.

It was recommended by support to trash iPhoto, reboot, and then re-purchase, but upon doing so, the option in the app store isn't to purchase or update, but to 'accept'. So I clicked that and entered my apple ID; no problem, but no action. Doesn't do anything. Apple support doesn't have an answer and now I'm waiting on an email...

That's good news. Glad yours is working.

I heard back from apple and they suggested installing iPhoto from the original discs (Of course! CDs! Remember those?). So sure enough, it was there, and what I trashed was probably a migrated version of iLife from 2006 or so. I'm thinking this will solve it, surely, but when I try to launch iPhoto 8.1.2 (the version that came with my imac in 2010) it tells me:

You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.

You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto.

And it quits from there.

So I try to update iPhoto in the app store, but instead of update, it gives me the option to buy. So that may be what I have to do now, but I'm waiting to hear back confirming hopefully that buying iPhoto again will work and I'll successfully access my photo library... But considering that I'm really just updating, I expect apple to provide it free of charge.

Anybody else having this trouble with old software and new updates? 😟

Upgrading from v8 (iPhoto 09) to v9 is upgrading from iPhoto 09 to iPhoto 11. That requires a purchase. YOu can do that on the App Store.

If that's the case, then I should probably just buy iPhoto 11. It's a shame though that my previous iPhoto which worked fine for me no longer works with Mavericks, forcing me to buy the new software... But your post seems to be the last piece in the puzzle.

Kind of a similar problem. Just bought a new Macbook Pro last month. Transferred everything from my old original Macbook Pro to the new one. Installed Mavericks last week. Now I have no access to my iPhoto library on my new computer. At least I still have the old library on the old computer.

This is the current message:

The Photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may tak an hour or more to complete.

Twice I tried to upgrade and after 2 hours each try and continuous spinning ball nothing has happened. Frustrating at this point. Never had any problems with any upgrades or new apple/mac in previous 20 years.

It's a shame though that my previous iPhoto which worked fine for me no longer works with Mavericks, forcing me to buy the new software...

You can revert the Library to the 8.1.2 form with iPhoto Library Manager and not spend any money.

This is the current message:

Option 1

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.

If that fails:

Option 2

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)

This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I decided to buy the latest iPhoto and all is well now. Since I couldn't update from the old one anyway, this is probably better.

To get there from my previous iPhoto not working with the Mavericks update, I had to:

1) Trash my old iPhoto; then the app store only gave the option to 'accept'

2) Re-install iphoto from my original discs

3) Then the app store gave the option to 'buy'

4) I bought it and it replaced the old iPhoto and updated my library, no problem

Recently upgraded to Mavericks (10.9) and iPhoto 9.5 (as prompted) - first time opening iPhoto post upgrade, it said it needed to upgrade library and I assumed did so (although it did seem quick!) - then imported photos from two separate cards and merged events - closed iPhoto, wouldn't re-open with "you can't open the application iphoto because it is not supported on this type of mac" (at that time icon was "normal" but since restart is now greyed out with stop sign) - have tried everything Old Toad has suggested - had online chat with Apple, but needs iPhoto specialist in UK and they've closed (I work too!) - so, could try your remedfy but ...

By "trash" I assume you mean hold down my mouse button in Launchpad 'til the icons quiver, then click the cross on iPhoto?

What if I don't have CDs (only recently bought my first iMac!)
