Jan 27, 2014 1:27 PM in response to Explosion5000by bjordanbc,In my opinion Apple will likely never release a 4K display but will release a display in a future time frame with 2X the display resolution of their current Thunderbolt display. We know this because this is how Apple operates now. That means that the resolution will be 5120x2880. If Apple wants anything to work it will be that monitor and only that monitor for high resolution external connectivity on the Late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina.

Jan 27, 2014 1:37 PM in response to bjordanbcby bjordanbc,To reiterate, Apple may release a 4K monitor, but they will also release a 5120x2880 monitor as well and they might not release at the same time. The outcome may also still be the same.

Jan 27, 2014 11:40 PM in response to bjordanbcby johnniecache,5120x2880 at 27" makes complete sense, because it must be a "retina" display, which requires 220ppi or more (i guess apple will stick to 220ppi for a while in the computer sector)
5120x2880@27"=217ppi
Another plan might be not to update the drivers before that new TBdisplay comes out. So MBPr owners havent already bought something else in the meantime?

Jan 28, 2014 12:11 PM in response to Explosion5000by jdiamond,While this could be the case, it usually strikes me as the reverse: Apple makes far more profits on selling new laptops than monitors, so they use the new monitors to drive new laptop sales, not vice versa. When the Thunderbolt displays came out, I did not have a Mac with Thunderbolt, and it was many years before I had one. Apple is still somewhat judged on sales of Macs - they have never reported sales of monitors.

Jan 30, 2014 5:46 AM in response to bjordanbcby LocutusEstBorg,The 27" 2560x1440 displays are a higher PPI than the 24" 1920x1080 displays and everything looks too small to read. They only need a 3840x2160 display at 27" for it to be retina and elements to look normal sized with 200% DPI scaling up from 1920x1080.

Jan 30, 2014 5:51 AM in response to MacPlus87by LocutusEstBorg,AnandTech says it's a whitelist on Mavericks. It already supports 4K 60Hz MST but only on whitelisted monitors (Sharp and ASUS). Windows uses the stock nVidia / AMD driver which doesn't have artificial restrictions.
-
Jan 30, 2014 6:09 AM in response to LocutusEstBorgby DannyWoods,Yes the Mac Pro supports those monitors at 4K 60Hz but the MacBook Retina (2013 - TB2 - the product in question here) supports NO 4K monitors at 60Hz, UNLESS you're in Windows 8.1. In Windows it there is no driver issue with any 4K displays at 60Hz. That's part of the argument.... Why would Apple force users that want a full 4K experience to do so using a different, let alone Microsoft's, OS on their own systems!

Feb 3, 2014 11:34 AM in response to johnniecacheby TomInIowa,I can connect from my mac pro late 2013 to the dell P2815q monitor using hdmi and / or an thunderbolt to displayport adapter to an displayport to minidisplay port cable.
Using just an thunderbolt cable did not work (for me).

Feb 3, 2014 12:10 PM in response to TomInIowaby PaintingStar,Could you please post a link for the Thunderbolt to displayport adapter.
Is the Dell P2815Q available now?
Are you managing to get 60Hz / 4K via the Thunderbolt port?
Cheers,
-
Feb 3, 2014 12:14 PM in response to PaintingStarby johnniecache,the P2815Q can only display 4k at 30Hz.
I would have absolutely bought this one, if it could do 60Hz.
Please Apple give us a 4k Display and make it work with late 2013 MBPs!
-
Feb 4, 2014 6:05 PM in response to PaintingStarby TomInIowa,as far as I can tell, the Dell P2815Q acts the same when connected by hdmi or mini displayport. 30Hz.
The Dell has list price of $699, but can be found on the web for less. I got my at little bit before Feb 1.

Feb 4, 2014 6:38 PM in response to TomInIowaby bjordanbc,TomInIowa please read the specs on the Dell P2815Q. It was made to be only 30hz in 4K and is 30hz on any operating system under any condition, this is widely known. In my honest opinion you should take it back. Get either the Dell 4K Ultrasharp 24 inch UP2414Q for $1299, which is 60hz and has 99% color gamut or get the (just announced) 4K 60hz Asus PB287Q coming out in the second half of this year for $800.

Feb 5, 2014 8:35 AM in response to bjordanbcby DannyWoods,He's right, but don't get either Dell - NO MST for the support for the ultrasharp in OS X even in 10.9.2! 30Hz is the worst mistake Dell could have made. Ugh. But Get the Asus! I've been in contact with JJ (Dr. Asus - media relations) and he's confirmed the 60Hz will work with OS X MST and even better it will be out by March - end of Q1! I getting one myself! I'll post up when JJ gives me a date for its release or pre-order. Word up!

yes. but only on the Mac Pro with AMD Graphics Cards.
This Thread is about the Macbook Pro, it uses NVidia Geforce 750M, and the nvidia driver does not support MST, even not in latest beta 10.9.2, so nobody knows if or when it will come

Feb 5, 2014 12:54 PM in response to jksdfjkby PaintingStar,This thread is interesting, frustrating and dissappointing.
Maybe we should all write to Apple expressing our concerns about the limitations of the OS X Mavericks software
graphics card drivers..
So basically, when the ASUS monitor is released, bad luck for MacBook Pro Retina (Late 2013) owners!
This is starting to become a bad joke.
