Nov 2, 2013 4:31 AM in response to hexdiyby anothertime,Correct me if I'm wrong but I never signed up for an alpha testing phase. Like everyone else here, I downloaded a GM version of an OS that is failing to do some of the most basic things: External monitor support & data integrity

Nov 2, 2013 4:57 AM in response to anothertimeby Drew Reece, anothertime,
You are right, but hexdiy also has a point, caution is a virtue. Installing the first release of any OS is something not to be taken lightly, especially when there has been little time for other users to report major issues like this.

Nov 2, 2013 5:58 AM in response to Drew Reeceby anothertime,I understand new features having a glitch or two, stuff you can work around with a few tweaks here and there, losing data is not acceptable since the only variable here is the OS.
As far as I can tell we have the following options here:
People who have lost data:
- Wait for HDD manufacturer and Apple to provide a mechanism to recover data (if possible)
- Do the data recovery yourselves using 3rd party apps / tools.
People who haven't lost data:
- Create a backup on a different machine and stick with Mavericks until disk failure/patch is released
- Revert back to a previuos OS
Can anyone confirm if the affected drives have any HW malfunction after the incident?

Nov 2, 2013 7:57 AM in response to LinFamilyby LinFamily,I have been in communication with LaCie. I guess their bottom line is that this is not their problem, for various reasons. Here is their last communication with me:
"
The Firewire daisy chaining configuration is as follows.
- All should be FireWire connections.
- No hybrid connections as it wouldn't work, adapters or converters are not guaranteed to work even though they might have support for daisy chaining.
- Better to chain up to 4 drives for a reliable daisy chaining configuration even though the real maximum chaining limit is 63 drives.
- If you face any issues with daisy chaining then the specific drive/drives should be tested by connecting directly to a computer via FireWire for testing, different connection ports and cables should be tested as well.
As for the LaCie desktop manager, it can be u-installed completely using the preferences button found in it's own menu. And yes it's recommended to turn the drives off when shutting down your computer.
Please note that OSX 10.9 has produced lots of hardware and software compatibility issues so the issue might be related to the operating system as well. If the issue is related to the used adapter or operating system then it's advise to connect Apple support regarding the matter as they should be able to provide you with the most accurate support related to OSX 10.9 and the mentioned Thunderbolt/FW adapter.

Nov 2, 2013 12:02 PM in response to xboxtremeby Dimas Fernandez Gorostarzu,Joining the club. 2TB WD MyBook gone with the wind. 6 years of images, videos and music. Thanks to Western Digital and Apple, thank you very much.

Nov 2, 2013 12:35 PM in response to xboxtremeby Wizznl,Again a new member. 3TB WD My Book lost all data music movies etc. Thanks to all the test teams at WD you're work is dearly appreciated and to the people at Apple for not carring enough to check their systems capability not to mess up external drives.

Nov 2, 2013 3:08 PM in response to xboxtremeby kierant@cogs,It's just struck me too. WD My Book Studio II, configured RAID 0.
One interesting new bit of detail in this example -- I had the drive daisy-chained through a Seagate non-RAID external drive on FireWire 400 due to using a MacBook with only 400 capability (then an 800 cable to the My Book). All was well for a week under Mavericks.
It was only tonight that I first connected the My Book alone, that I had the problem. The custom icon appeared momentarily, followed by the generic FireWire disc icon, and a blank disc. The Seagate drive remains okay.

Nov 2, 2013 5:13 PM in response to xboxtremeby dno_au,Same Issue - WD My Book Studio II in RAID 1, connected by Firewire 800, upgraded to Mavericks last weekend. During the week I firstly noticed the drive as empty and an extra EFI drive show up. Now it's just empty...
The entire point of have this as RAID 1 was that it was suppose to be redundent, so I was less worried about how it was backed up.1Tb of pictures, music and home movies - GONE! Very unhappy!

Nov 2, 2013 5:24 PM in response to kierant@cogsby hexdiy,Very valuable info, kierant@cogs. With a shrewd but rare and functional connection setup/ workaround, too.
It was only tonight that I first connected the My Book alone
On a different, FW 800 capable Mac then, I assume? Lets keep the i s dotted in this case, it is too important. Which Macs, which specific external drives in both cases if so?
Anyhow, why do I inquire? If what you tell us is valid, which I believe it is, the root of the issue in this thread may well lie in either FW 800 implementation in Mavericks ( maybe in combination with the use of Raid 0 devices), or some specific Sata to FW bridge/ chipset instead of/ in combination with ( remnants of) WD software.
I know, still too many variables just now...
