Nov 9, 2013 7:45 AM in response to nggalaiby Drew Reece,It sounds an awful lot like some tools are 'file carving'
e.g. searching for the file headers to recover the data portion of files without the original name & external metadata. One side effect of this is that you can get deleted & partially erased files.
Other tools are managing to recover the metadata by finding & repairing the disk catalog.
My guess is that the bug just ruined the original partition table & catalog.
I still recoomend taking a look at the free CGSecurity tools - but you need to use the command line.
PhotoRec will 'file carve' files
TestDisk looks for the partition table.

Nov 9, 2013 1:39 PM in response to alteryby AKabas,altery>@AKabas: In my case, yes. I ran 'Deep Scan' in Data Rescue 3 on the whole drive (not just the volume).
Yes but still no dice. Just generic names and no file structure.

Nov 10, 2013 9:11 AM in response to xboxtremeby aj_amour,I am having very similar problems with the new upgrade but luckily none of my files have been lost. I posted a question in the community but haven't received a response yet so maybe you guys can help...I hope.
Here are my issues:
Nov 9, 2013 6:46 AMI am having several problems with my time machine backups since upgrading to OS X Mavericks. I am not sure if this is when the problems began but this is when I noticed it. I use a Seagate Backup plus 1 TB usb 3.0 for Mac as my external hard drive.
First, I noticed after my computer restarted from the upgrade that my external hard drive icon on my desktop was orange instead of the greenish blue it usually is. I opened time machine preferences and clicked on select disk, thats when I noticed that there were two icons for the same disk, one in the “backup disk” section which only gives me the option to remove disk and one in the “available disk” section which gives me the option to use disk (even though it's already in use). I don’t ever remember seeing this before.
I selected ‘My Book” in the available disk section and time machine began the backup count down. The backup ran it’s course without a problem and stated that it would preform the next backup in an hour. The next backup never happen. I then began messing about in time machine preferences to try and find a solution, thats when i clicked on options and noticed that my “my book” was in the “exclude these items from backups” section. I have no clue how it got there as I have never used this section before. I tried selecting it but nothing highlighted so i could not remove it.
I then noticed that the little padlock icon to the left bottom of the "off on" section was not there.
I suspect that the problem lies with "my book" being in the exclude section but I do not know how to remove it since I can not select it. Now I have to manually backup my computer even though I have it set for automatic backup.
Please help
Thanks in advance
MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Nov 10, 2013 9:13 AM in response to xboxtremeby Eric Root,Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Nov 10, 2013 10:22 AM in response to xboxtremeby kierant@cogs,And when prompted, Apple may look here to get more info / examples -- while I was on the phone to support, for example, I told the operator the title of this thread and she had a quick look.
Anyway, the main point of writing -- Data Rescue 3 has finished, after 70 hours. It was reporting 3 million files while scanning but after analysis it's down to a more sensible number of thousands. Most of them look like they're there.
It has not fully restored any structure, but I can see why previous posters might have thought it had, at first: the files are arranged into a practical structure, by file type, including "Audio", "Movies", etc. and where possible very sensible filenames have been attached. For example, it's drilled down into fonts to find their names, and into some audio files to get the track title from the ID3 tags or wherever. With images it's gone for a date from the EXIF, or failing that, for the size in pixels. Pretty useful. My iMovie and Final Cut projects are pretty jumbled up though, so that's where manual work will be required. Be sure to look in "orphans" if you get that; in there I randomly found Adobe Font Folio!

Nov 10, 2013 12:37 PM in response to Angelo.Mby AKabas,≥Angelo.MRegarding Data Rescue 3 could be a registered vs demo version problem?
I doubt it.
I must be one of the early victims to be hit with this disaster. I am still waiting to hear official word from WD and Apple since October 23 if there is any hope of restoring the original volume. Computer people I talked to says there is not, but I'm still crossing my fingers and trying to keep my cool which is very difficult.
During this time I tested EasyRecovery, Disk Drill and Data Rescue 3 and non could recover original file names and directory structure.

Nov 10, 2013 1:44 PM in response to AKabasby CALLOHANh,Apple have denied any resposibility for this problem and told me Wd is responsible for the erasures.
i used easy recovery and data rescue3 file names and structures are gone forever.
data recovery 3 did recover a few file names and creation dates but only recovered half the amount of files that easy recovery found.
Going to be a long process of sorting files and recataloging months for me.

Nov 10, 2013 3:20 PM in response to aj_amourby tbirdvet,aj_amour: What you are seeing as the status of the drives is correct. However, the missing padlock is not right. It should be there. Not sure why you did not have another backup as scheduled. Perhasp nothing changed or it was very short and fast if nothing much changed from last backup.

Nov 10, 2013 3:56 PM in response to tbirdvetby hexdiy,Perhaps the most blatant thing that happened to aj_amours drive is that his Seagate Backup plus 1 TB usb 3.0
was (again) renamed to My Book. 2nd thing is that before his TM backup the HDD presented itself with 2x 348,35GB partitions or as 2x separate external disks called My Book. After the 1 and only TM backup, however, his Seagate still presented itself as My Book, but as a single disk or partition with a size of 651,51GB. Did Mavericks or TM repartition the thing all by itself? Didn't this strike anyone?
@ aj_amour: thx for the valuable screenshots!

Nov 10, 2013 4:32 PM in response to hexdiyby Drew Reece,Congrats hexdiy, you have a habit for pointing out the obvious
The renaming & re-sizing of disks is what this issue is all about. This looks like aj_amour has captured the corruption in progress (or just after)?
Is the next stage to get an EtreCheck report to see if there are any clear signs of third party tools running?
Would be usefull to confirm if aj_amour has any of the known WD tools installed wouldn't it?
What tools should be checked for?
Is there a list?
Care to post one of these reports aj_amour ?

Incorrect, the "lock" is not present in Mavericks.
