@altery. You did anything special? My deep scan in Data Rescue 3 is finished. It gives me a 'Found files' folder and a 'Reconstructed files' folder. But I don't realy get the feeling I've got any file structure back. Since all files are ordered in folders like 'Movies' and 'Audio'....

Is there anyone who had any succes with other programs to get the file structure back? Anyone who actualy tried the 'TestDisk'?

Or is there anyone who knows what to do after watching the screenshot I made? Thnx

I would need the new WD software only *temporarily* to set my Studio II to RAID 1 mode.
 Unfortunately this can only be done in conjunction with formatting the unit by using WD Drive Manager incl. WD RAID manager. 
I'm afraid it's not possible to use RAID 1 and format the drive via Apple Disk Utility.
 Or is it?

I thought it wouldn't be possible to manage RAID 1 via Apple software, because this unit (RAID 1, managed internally) appears to OS X as ONE drive. Or is this wrong?

Here's part of an interesting response from Western Digital on my case - (bold italics mine):

"The case has been escalated to me for further support. Based on your email the unit you are having problems with is a Seagate drive not Western Digital. Please confirm if I am not mistaken.  If the unit is not from Western Digital then you may need to seek assistance from Seagate since the applications from WD will only interact with drive we manufacture."

Well, since neither my enclosure nor the drives were WD and I still suffered the 'MyBook' repartitioning issue, I am taking issue with that resonse.  Would anyone else who had non WD drives affected by the WD software like to add their voice to the choir? I suggest you contact WD....

My original partition seems completly gone. Every program shows only the new MyBook partition, all the seperate files and 2 EFI partitions. Is there a possibility one of those EFI partitions contains the data to recover my file structure or do I realy need to give up and do it with the nameless files?

I tried TestDisk, DiskDrill, DataRescue 3, EasyRecovery... and I don't even remember what more...

I try OnTrack Pro (WD support give me serial number) and Data Rescue3 - in both exception i recover files group into conteners like JPG, VIDEO. PDF etc, files got new, random names (sick!). For revcovery i must connect another external HDD.

I prefere to recover all files structure but for now i think it is not possible.

Now still waiting for respond from WD support.

Having a hard time following. One tmore time...who has had success with data recovery software?

I ran OnTrack and it found files, but showed then folders such as photos, videos, documents, etc. Do I just go with this or has someone actually been abel to recover a file structure? And if so, what settings and program was used?

I've tried OnTrackPro, as well as Disk Warrier and DiskDrill and some command line tools. I also originally sent my drive off to a professional data recovery company and they could not rebuild the file structure so I am now recovering at the file level (without file names etc).

I have tried OnTrackPro with no success. With a license given to me by WD. After 3 trials it kept hanging, and estimating at 18 days the time needed to recuperate 1 Tb of files. I ended up buying Data Rescue 3 and I was able to recover much of the material at the file level, without the original folders or file names.

I had Final Cut pro projects and media that are now unusable because of the lost directory.

My heart sinks everytime I hear these.

My drive is going to Kroll Ontrack in Germany. I am not keeping my hopes high. I will share the results.

After upgrading to Marvericks, my WD MY Book Studio II (Raid 1) worked fine for about a week. At that time, I did not have the WD software installed. Suddenly, one day, the Studio II was reset back to the default state and I lost all my data. Luckily, I had most of the data backup on other disks.

I thought that it might be because I did not install the WD software. So I downloaded the software from WD web sites and install it. Reformatted the Studio II (Raid 1) and moved files back to it. It worked for more than two weeks. I was so happy and thought that the problem was resolved. Suddenly, today, the same thing happened again. So I would like to warn people that do not trust the WD Studio II (and possibly other WDs) in the Mavericks environment. Although it may appear to work fine after installation, there is a risk that it may fail one day. Wait untill WD and/or Apple solve this issue, do not attempt to do so. Since I need a RAID 1 drive urgently, I may buy a Lacie (though much more expensive) and forget about the Studio II (and possibly any WD extrenal drives from now on).

By the way, the WD hard disks themeselves seem to be OK when working in other external drive cases. I have a WD hard disk put into a Century external case and use it for Time Machine. It has been working fine all the time.

The drives that failed... how were they formatted and was there any 3rd party drive management software running on them?

I've always reformatted any HDs with Apple Disk Utility and never used any 3rd party software to manage my drives. Presently my Hitachi HDs (2010) are GUID Formatted. I'm still on 10.8.5

My mate has 2 WD HDs formatted in Apple GUID Format with no 3rd party management software running and has had no problems since updating to Mavericks when it first came out.

We're using our drives (not RAIDs) only as Time Machine Backups.

WD now owns several other HD labels including Hitachi HDD. I don’t know about Seagate HDDs who some people have reported some of the same problems as with WDs.

I did read on the Apple site that Mavericks uses a newer Meta Data Read-Wright standard.

I’m thinking that the issue might be that if in fact Apple has moved to a newer (better?) Meta Data Read-Wright standard that the new standard has found old flaws in some software that were not a problem under the past Meta Data Read-Wright standards.

Any comments out there?

New to this list.  I had similar loss but NOT on Western Digital drives - a Drobo Raid and three Seagate (all connected via Thunderbolt.) 

Want others to know this affects ANY DIRECT ATTACHED stroaqge, not just WD, but the "villain" is clearly the WD DriveManager app that was installed ages ago to support a WD Raid 0 I have.

IWWs fine on Mavericks for several weeks.  The lastweek I plugged in a WD MyBook.  It trahsed the Drobo, and all three Seagate drives.  The WD DriveManager tried to name ALL volumes "MyBook" (a rather telling clue as to what did it, and succeeded on all but "seconf" partitions on two Seagate drives, AND succeeeded in erasing (or quirck formatting?) each voilume it named.

I updated to WD's new drivemanager AFTER the event,m and Uninstalled that.  (WD had provided an uninstaller, but threw that away when they did the late-Novewmber update.)

In my case, I lost an SVN repository drive, my TimeMachine, and my PRIMARY data source the Drobo.  Fortunately I have cloud-based back up for the latter.

As to formatting ALL of my drives were hfs+ and, as noted, Thunderbolt-connected.  However the WD Drive that I plugged in that started the crash was USB2 connecrted.
