It's not that complicated at all. At the beginning and ending of the Audio clips there is button that you just drag for the length of fade in, fade out that you want.User uploaded file

Further to Bruce's explanation, see this iMovie 10 Help Topic regarding "Adjust Volume". The topic gives a full rundown on how to adjust audio, including using key frames and fading in and out.

Great to see that all the audio adjustments (plus more) from iMovie '11 have been included in the new iMovie (version 10; iMovie 2013).

But if you want to make a 30 second movie, and your music is 4:45 this doesn't apply. iMovie used to fade it out for you to go with your clip length.

iMovie 10 does have a setting that automatically trims the background music so that the music ends when the video clips end. See this iMovie 10 Help topic -

Particularly see the last dot point in paragraph 3, which reads:

To automatically trim background music to fit the length of your movie: Select the “Trim background music” checkbox.

The button appears when you place the pointer over a clip. When the pointer is then positioned directly over the button, a left and right arrowhead appears. Click on the button and drag inwards to fade the audio, or outwards to reduce the fade duration.

Note that if you have a transition between two clips, the fade buttons do not appear. Transitions will place an automatic fade (crossfade) to the audio on both clips. However, if you delete the transition, you can then perform a manual fade (as I described), then reinsert the transition. If preferred, after deleting a transition you can reinstate the portion of each clip used in the transition. Just drag the ends of the clips outwards. If you reach the end of the available media for either clip, a vertical red line appears at the edge of the clip end.

Can anyone on this thread tell me why my audio is just a thin green strip? I would love to fade in the volume at the beginning of the audio but it doesn't have the node to adjust that. Double-clicking opens the Clip Trimmer.

This is a royalty free classical song that I dropped into the project. I also put it into iTunes and imported it into the project but that didn't seem to make a difference.

At the far right under the Viewer you will see a button alongside the zoom slider. Placing the pointer over this button will reveal its purpose as "Adjust thumbnail appearance". Click on the button and a pop-up window will appear. Check (tick) the box labelled "Audio: Show Waveforms".

You should now be able to fade the audio using the fade buttons at each end of the audio clip (as described in one of my earlier posts).
