I am unable to use my Canoscan 8800F under Mavericks. It worked nicely under ML. Any suggestion? Thx.

    Hello guys,

After downloading and installing the drivers and software, as I checked the thread as closed, my 24" iMac still not recognize my 8800F Canoscan...

Where can I find the driver files on my system, in order to delete them and retry ?

    My mac's version is 10.9.

    Thanks !

    Dear Skuzzlebutt2000,

Don't delete anything.  Have you done all of these things?

After upgrading to Mavericks, you must also upgrade two more things to support the Canoscan 8800F:

    - Upgrade the driver to version 13.9.2a.

    - Upgrade the software MP Navigator EX1.0 to version 1.0.8

    - Upgrade the software MP Navigator EX1.0 Opener

You'll find all of these downloads here:
    http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/scanners/canoscan_series/canoscan _8800f#DriversAndSoftware

With these, you'll be able to use Canon's MP Navigator app to run the scanner. But Image Capture still won't work, and the buttons on the scanner also won't work unless Canon updates one more thing - their ICA driver for this scanner.  (It's all explained in this too-long thread.)

The ICA driver is not responsible for the buttons on the scanner. That is the function of MP Nav Opener. The ICA driver is just for scanning with Image Capture.

I don't want to argue with you, PAHU.  If you look at Canon's instructions, they tell you to use Image Capture to set up the buttons - but you can't because Image Capture says there are no devices.  If you have a magical way to get the buttons to work, please share it here - I'd like that.

MP Navigator Opener worked with MP Navigator with previous versions of OS X. You set the button actions via the Preferences menu of MP Navigator. I've never known it to work with Image Capture.

You mention instructions explaining to use it with Image Capture. Where are these instructions?

Also I don't have this model to test. I will try and locate another model that has the buttons on the scanner that also has drivers for Mavericks.

I do have this model and have discussed exactly this issue with Canon tech. support. Below are the instructions for configuring the buttons that Canon referred me to. But since Image Capture doesn't recognize the scanner (ICA driver issue), you can't get past step 1. As a result, there is no way to set the buttons to use MP Navigator Opener.  Canon Tech Support did not have a solution for this. Therefore, the buttons will not work until Canon fixes the ICA driver problem.

1.Open the [Applications] folder in the hard disk and double-click Image Capture. The preview scan automatically starts.
    2.Click [Options].
3.Select [CanoScan Toolbox] in [When a scanner button is pressed, open:] on the [Settings] screen.
4.Click [OK] and quit [Image Capture].
CanoScan Toolbox starts automatically the next time you press a scanner button.

I'm still not convinced its entirely due to the lack of an ICA driver.

In testing the CS8800F on 10.8, the scanner does appear in Image Capture - but only after you install the scanner driver. Checking the contents of the CanonIJScanner package (/Library/Image Capture/Devices) I can see no reference to the CS8800F. There are entires for the CS5600F and the CS9000F, which is confirmed by the Apple drivers article HT3669, but not the CS8800F. So it would appear that the scanner driver somehow adds support for using the device with Image Capture and also lets you add the scanner to the Print & Scan preference pane. And this is also where you can set the scanner button actions, such as opening the scanner window or MP Navigator.

So based on the 10.8 test results I don't see why the same driver does not provide the same function on 10.9? More testing required.

Anyway, at least the scanner still works. Plenty of users with older models of scanner that cannot scan since updating to 10.9.

PAHU, Here's some information that may be useful to you:  I have two hard drives: my current one (MacOS 10.9) and a backup drive from 10.7.5.  The 8800F works as it should when I boot from the 10.7.5 drive.

Looking in /Library/Image Capture/Devices in both drives, I see files for Canon IJScanner1, Canon IJScanner2 and Canon IJScanner4 (10.9 only). Neither drive has anyting there specifically for Canoscan.

Also, both the 10.7.5 and 10.9 drives do have entries in /Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources called CanoScan 8800F.ds

On the 10.7.5 drive, if you opened the 1 or 2 packages, you will find a file called CanonDevice.plist. Is the CS8800F listed in either file?

This is the Data Source file for the TWAIN driver - that's installed by the scanner driver. This is used by TWAIN applications like Adobe Acrobat to scan.

Sorry - I should have also mentioned: when I boot from 10.7.5,, Image Capture does list the Canoscan 8800F but not when I boot in 10.9.  And that's the reason I can't complete Canon's procedure to configure the buttons in 10.9.  But, applications that use Canon's new (13.9.2a) TWAIN  driver, including MP Navigator and third-party apps like Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop, are working.

    Re. your question:

Actually, no. Looking on the 10.7.5 drive, I did "show package contents" for each, opened the "Resources" folder, and opened CanonDevice.plist (using Xcode).  Neither list of devices contains the Canoscan 8800F.

Re. the Printer / Scanner Preferences pane, the same thing is true. In 10.7.5, I was able to "add" the scanner.  When the scanner didn't work in 10.9, I thought it might help to remove the scanner and try adding it again in the new OS. But in 10.9, the Canoscan 8800F does not appear in the list of devices available to add.

Well this is interesting. For a long time I have believed that there would need to be some reference to the scanner in this plist in order for the device to be used with Image Capture. But with it not appearing in the 10.7.5 plist and it stilll appearing in Image Capture and the Print & Scan preference pane on the OS, then this theory cannot be correct.

I also could not see any other files within the Image Capture folder on 10.8 that showed the CS8800F, yet like your 10.7 build it appeared in Image Capture and Print & Scan and worked fine with the Copy button (which I had set to Save). There must be some additional file that is making the scanner appear in Image Capture on the previous OS's but not on 10.9. But it does appear that it is not due to the lack of an ICA driver.

In contrast to the above, a CanoScan LiDE 200 with no scanner driver or MP Nav Opener installed will appear in Image Capture, can be added to the Printers & Scanners pane and use the buttons on the front to scan. This device is listed in the CanonDevice.plist of the CanonIJScanner2 package so this does not help the theory.

I downloaded both (MP Navigator EX 1.0 and MP Navigator EX 1.0 Opener) from the canon site with the correct OS vers. (10.9) selected but the system still does not recognize my 8000F scanner. This is the message I get when I try to use the scan feature once MP Naigator is opened: Cannot communicate with scanner. Scanner may be disconnected or scanner is turned off. Check status. Scanner driver will be closed 155.0.0. I've shut down my computer and restarted it but to no avail.

My scanner is connected and does have power. It shows up as a device in the USB panel in the System Report folder but does not show up in the System Preferences folder.

If you mean it is not showing up in Printers & Scanners, then it doesn't due to the lack of a supporting ICA driver/reference. So this is not an indicator.

This is a bit different to what I have. My Mac shows a Version of 1.00 and the current required as 2mA. With your Mac showing "Unknown (Device has not been configured)" then it suggests the scanner driver has not been installed.

While in System Information, under the Heading of Software > Installations, do you have an entry of Canon ScanGear?

If not, download and install the CS8800F scanner driver.

If you do have an enty of Canon ScanGear, navigate to /Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources and check that you have a file called CanoScan 8800F.ds
