I do not have an 8800F scanner. I have an 8000F scanner. I have 4 entries for Canon ScanGear in my software/installation folder.
This is what I have in my library/Image Capture/ TWAIN Data Sources: CanoScan 8800F.ds  June 21, 2011, 8:00PM  6.9 MB  Application.

I'm not sure if this is the correct one since I have an 8000F scanner and not an 8800F.
Thank you for getting back to me so promptly.

    Best,

    Preston Craig

You cannot use the 8800F driver to operate the 8000F, so this would explain the error message.

Looking at the Canon web site, the last driver that Canon released for the 8000F was for 10.4. And looking at Vuescan's supported scanner page for the 8000F, it also mentions that you cannot use this application for 10.7 or later and no scanner driver is available.

So if the scanner is still working fine then you would need to look at getting an older Mac that can run 10.4, or possibly 10.6 at the latest.

Any ideas on getting GraphicConverter to work with the 8800? I have downloaded the recent updates, and it works in Acrobat Pro, and works with the MP Navigator. But in GC it doesn't find the TWAIN driver, which I verified is in /LIbrary/Image Capture.

Given that Acrobat and MP Navigator are working fine, and there is no support for applications that use the ICA driver, maybe GC requires an ICA driver rather than a TWAIN driver?

    PAHU and Rob,

GraphicConverter's [File : Scan] menu offers both Image Capture and  TWAIN scanning.  However  to use the TWAIN driver, you run into the same problem as configuring the scanner buttons (discussed above).  That is, before you can use a TWAIN scanner in GraphicConverter, you first have to select which scanner [File: Scan: Select TWAIN Scanner (data source) ] - and the 8800F is not listed among the available devices. So PAHU, we're back to that thing you and I couldn't figure out when we looked through the Library files - how do Image Capture, the System Preferences : Printers and Scanners panel, etc. discover the available scanners and why is the 8800F not being discovered?

Sorry, Rob. I know that's not the answer you were hoping for.  By the way, I just received an email from Thorston Lemke announcing "GraphicConverter 9" -  a paid update, stating that it is fully compatible with Mavericks (10.9).  There's no assurance that it resolves this scanner issue, and my guess is that it won't - but maybe.  If it does, I'll post an update here.

Update: Sorry to report that GraphicConverter 9 has the same problem.

In their help pages for this ("older TWAIN scanner doesn't appear ...") they suggest re-starting in 32-bit mode.  I tried it, but it didn't help.

I just sent Mr. Lemke a link to the driver. Will post if I get results.

I noted that SOHO Notes also can't find it (also a TWAIN user).

Maybe the relevant question is why Acrobat CAN find it. I downloaded a trial of Vuescan, and it works.

I just tested the CS8800F with Presto! PageManager 9 Standard, which is also a TWAIN application, and had no issue with scanning into that app.

So this is interesting that the scanner is working with some TWAIN applications but not others.

So are you using MP Navigator to scan with or some other application?

I called Canon. They had me trash Canon Utilities then download again. It's different, but it works. Image Capture doesn't and the buttons don't either. At least I won't have to buy another scanner.

I have a Canoscan 8800F and am running Mountain Lion 10.8.5.

The 8800f is not recognized by Image Capture and third-party apps (like Mariner's 'Paperless') which rely solely on the ICA driver.

While they have indeed updated the TWAIN driver up through Mavericks, Canon told me they will not be updating the ICA driver.

This is very frustrating considering that:

    1. Paperless dropped support for TWAIN drivers (claiming that TWAIN is an old technology that caused problems with its software).

    2. a much, much older scanner than the 8800F, the Epson Perfection 1250U, has an updated ICA driver. I stumbled on this during my research:  the 1250U was released before Mac OSX, and they're still supporting it. And yet, Canon says they can't update the driver for a scanner released in 2007.

I hope the Canon people were wrong, and they do release an ICA driver. Otherwise, no more Canon scanners for me.

I have an 8800F that I have the same issue with. The easy fix is "Vuescan" 3rd party app. https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/4763/vuescan

Understand your frusteration, but I gave up on Canon's support of drivers a few years ago, and haven't looked back.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks, but if I understand correctly, VueScan doesn't provide an ICA driver that other applications can use.

Without an ICA driver, I can't scan from within Paperless, which is what I want to do because it simplifies the workflow.

If I must scan outside of Paperless, then the TWAIN driver and MP Navigator will suffice.
