MBA 13 Mid 2013 crash Black screen

Has anyone else encountered an issue where they are using their Mid-2013 MacBook Air (13in) on battery when the machine suddenly goes to sleep or appears to, but it has actually crashed. The screen is dark, keyboard and trackpad are not responsive and the keyboard backlight is on. You have to force it off to restart by pressing and holding the power button? It is completely random, not a kernel panic, and nothing I can see in any logs. After the recent firmware update the symptoms changed such that the display is still active since the Apple logo is lighted. I've never had it happen when I'm on a/c power. Unfortunately its random and infrequent too. The recent firmware indicated it helped with battery issues, etc. didn't fix mine apparently.

Had my mba since Aug-13, Initially had the issue but solved it by putting the macbook into hibernate mode via SmartSleep. Since upgrading to Mavricks, it came back and had* to send it to Genius Bar to get to fixed (see reciept below)

This fixed it for a month or so and now its back...

APPLE FIX THE DANG ISSUE or well I'll jsut send it in for repair again.....User uploaded file

It did not work for me.

Apple told me that this is a software/firmware issue and the engineers are working on it, but I suspect this is a hardware issue which might have a software workaround.

When I got my mac from the repair, it worked nice for a while. 3-4 days maybe. But I realized that, if I put it to sleep by closing the lid, and wake it up by opening the lid, the screen stayed off for a while. Normally it opens while I open the lid, right?

At first, I was opening the lid and pressing a button. It felt like the keyboard did not work for like 4-5 seconds. To be honest, it felt like it was a trick to prevent us from reproducing the issue.

If the things you use to wake it up don't work while it is going to sleep, you wouldn't be able to crash it, would you? Because you need to interrupt its sleep, but you can't. I mean, if you leave the computer alone while it is going to sleep, you would never know there is a problem like this; hence, they might make us leave it alone while it is going to sleep.

I am losing my trust to Apple here.

Meanwhile, I decided to try to get a refund. I talked to Apple, they can't do anything because I didn't buy it from Apple Store (Because there isn't one in Turkey), I talked to the repair center, they told me that they couldn't find a problem with it so they can't do anything. I told them that Apple is aware of this issue. He said he'll check this with Apple and will get back to me.

Consumer laws here in Turkey is not very protective, but there is a last chance, a committee for the consumer rights. Although my case is not strong, I'm thinking of going that way if repair center can't solve it.

@mesutyasar

Is your MBA no longer crashing? It just takes longer for it to wake up? Like 4-5 seconds?

My MBA also takes a couple of seconds to wake up from sleep. Sometimes it takes 1 - 2 seconds, sometimes it takes 3 - 4, or a bit longer still. It was a brand new machine Apple replaced for me before Christmas for the one that had the black screen crash. This new one never crashed, now over 1 month, no matter how hard I tried to provoke it.

I am happy with this new MBA. The few seconds to wake is nothing.

Before I bought the MBA, I had a HP. You know how long it took that HP to wake? At least 5-6 seconds, sometimes even over 1 minute!

So I am having trouble understanding your point. If the machine no longer crashes, I would be happy now if I were you.

Cheers!

@frelion

No, it does it again. It worked for 3-4 days and then started to crash again.

And that is my problem. It's not the 4-5 seconds I am going to lose if they make a workaround like this. They have the option to come up with a workaround instead of a fix. These are different things for me. I bought Macbook so I could do my work without worrying about things like that. A workaround is likely to fail in the future. Say, you made a change in the options etc and there it goes, crashing again.

My old desktop was a monster and it took it 10 seconds to wake. But I was not expecting it to wake up instantly. That was how it was supposed to work. A Macbook, is supposed to wake up immediately. I know that, because it normally wakes up immediately.

Like I said, 5-6 seconds don't matter, I lost hours of work because of this crash. You work, you are concentrated and you forget to save. Then it crashes and puts you back where you are.

I bought this product, because I thought Apple delivers what it promises. And in case it did not deliver it in the first place, it is quick to fix the problem. That was my thought. But we all can see that this is not the case here.

They offer me workarounds, like not putting it to sleep, or not touching it if it is trying to sleep etc. But I did not pay for it to be alert all the time. Every time I am talking to a new Apple support guy, that's their first option. I learnt that, and if they ask me if I am near the computer, I say "I'm not gonna disable sleep, because that's not how it should work, I paid for a reliable machine with good battery life."

And sometimes they lectured me about the importance of frequently saving my work. I was a happy Windows user and it was my habit to save my work every 2-3 minutes. Nobody saves his work more than a Windows user. That was why I escaped from Windows to Mac OS. But everything I escaped, is here.

So, what I am trying to say is that, a workaround is a temporary solution. It can crash any time. A fix, however, is the solution: It won't crash anymore because of the solved issue. You know that.

What happened to "It simply works." or "It just works."? Mine does not. That is my frustration, that is my problem.

I simply want my device that I paid for to work as it should. It shouldn't have any conditions to work. Obviously I don't expect it to type stuff for me, read my mind, keep working even when the battery is dead or automatically open its lid and say hello when I wake up.

This is like being able to call someone with your phone ONLY if you stare at the screen for 5 seconds to make the call. Or being able to sleep in your bed only if you turn 360 degrees in the bed.

Please tell me if there is anything absurd about what I want.

I would feel bad if you thought this message is towards you, it is not. I have been flooding this thread for a while, all are similar posts. It is not directed to anyone, it is not to the Apple guys who I talked to. It is just put out there.

I know there are people who loves Apple so much that even a lousy workaround would make them happy, I also know there are people who hates Apple so much that even a 3rd party app crashes the computer they will flame Apple. I am neither of these.

I am certain that if this does not end in a way that satisfies me, I'll sell this one even if I lose big money doing that and will get some other computer and be done with Apple. Would I get another Apple device if I get a refund or somehow this is fixed? I am not sure.

Rant is over. Thanks to those who could make it to here 🙂 I'm hoping I don't get angrier than I am now and this is my last rant 🙂 I apologize for your precious time.

UPDATE:

Installed 10.9.2 beta 4 (13C48) today (a combo on top of a clean install of 10.9.1), and noticed that the behaviour of the power button has changed again. It now works as follows:

  • new: tap or hold less than 0.5 seconds: nothing happens
  • hold for 0.5 to 1.5 seconds: immediate sleep
  • hold for 1.5 to 4 seconds: dialog Restart/Sleep/Cancel/Shut Down
  • hold for 4 or more seconds: hard power down

The new power button behaviour makes it impossible to accidentally activate sleep when you intended to press delete, which is a great improvement!

And the best part of this beta is: all known tricks to reproduce the sleep-immediate-wake issue don't work! YES!

When booting to 10.9.1 on this laptop it is still very easy to reproduce the issue, so the software makes the difference here.

Hello,

I am joining this thread too. I bought a MBA 13 i7 8go 128Go back in July 2013. Since the start I have got sleep issues. First it was when the air was in sleep mode for some hours (doesn't went back from sleep). And since Mavericks this anoying bug. I triggered it almost everyday.

I went to the Genius Bar in France back in december, they changed both the power card and main board, telling now the bug is gone. Of course the bug was not gone, and I lost a Week. Last week I came to 'fnac', they sell Apple Computers, tried to reproduced the bug on three MBA, could not reproduce the bug. So I am going to the Apple Store tomorrow hoping they can fix my machine, or give me a new one. The only solution I found was setting timer for sleep to 10 minutes.

Feb 3, 2014 9:11 AM in response to Sarguin

I don't think it's only a software problem, because the fix comming in the next update is more about preventing the user to create the bug, than removing the bug. Furthermore, when you're MBA is wired to an external screen, sometime (it seems like two bug can happen) both screen remain black, and sometimes the external screen is steel working, we can see the mouse moving and that's all ! So I think there is a problem with the screen also (on my mba)

Feb 3, 2014 11:15 AM in response to matdecac

I have the same opinion.

richard_vd gave us some good news about power button behavior being changed, but my MBA can crash without any power button use.

Also, I was told that this is a software issue and it is investigated by the engineers. But the same thing was said to someone else in 2013 November. Read yoganinja's reply in the second page of this thread.

I don't know if richard_vd tried closing the lid and opening it immediately, or making it sleep using the Apple logo>Sleep menu and then trying to wake it up while it is sleeping, but I'm not holding my breath.

I wish I had a Apple Dev account so that I could check the new beta out.

Feb 3, 2014 12:49 PM in response to mesutyasar

To matdecac and mesutyasar Let me repeat what I wrote yesterday:

This is not just about changed power button behaviour. In 10.9.2 beta 4 (13C48) none of the known tricks work, meaning I can't trigger the issue anymore!

I repeatedly tried to:

  • close and open the lid
  • click Apple -> Sleep, then tap a key
  • enter 'pmset sleepnow' in Terminal and then tap a key
  • wait till screensaver kicks in, then tap a key
  • press power button, then tap another key
