For now, it looks like the reset worked... I am going to see how this works out over the next couple of hours..

    Thank you, so far :-)

I have not had a problem connecting to my home network using a xfinity modem/wireless router. However, when I go out I still have a problem at one location I like to frequent. One of my fav places uses a wifi company for security and I called them and they did some magic to make things work. The place I haven't got on the network is a more local place under private management. Not sure why there is a problem there. We reset the router and I still can't connect.

I also have th problem that the iPad and iPhone see the network and even seem to connect but then in seconds it disappears.

Is the problem with all WiFi networks, or only your home network? If it is just your home network try rebooting the router by removing all power for about 30 seconds. This will reset the router's ability to assign IP addresses.

There are several possible different problems. If the phone or iPad seems to connect, then disconnects after 30 seconds this means that the router did not assign an IP address to the device. Resetting the router will usually fix this. The test to see if this is the problem is to go to Settings/WiFi and tap on the "i" to the right of the network name. If there is no IP address or the IP address begins with 169.254 that will confirm a router problem.

If it has a valid IP address (it will usually begin with 10. or 192.) and you cannot connect to the Internet look at the DNS server information. Try adding the DNS address 8.8.8.8 (Google's DNS server) or  208.67.222.222 (OpenDNS).

With ALL wifi networks.  My phone will not locate ANY networks, home or work or starbucks, mcdonalds, etc.  it can't find any at all.  my wife's iphone and ipad find our home network just fine, and her phone works fine after the upgrade.  I have not upgraded the ipad in fear of losing the wifi.  Have done all the trouble shooting recommended.

I have not rebooted the router, as other apple devices in home have no problem connecting.  it's just my phone.

That's irrelevant. A router can stop working with one device and still work with others. And the problem can still be the router, not the device that isn't working. But, as your phone doesn't work with any networks it is not likely to be a problem with your router.

If the WiFi switch in settings is not greyed out it is most likely a software problem. Try the following, in order, until the problem is resolved:

    • Reboot the phone by holding HOME and SLEEP until an Apple logo appears.
    • Settings/General/Reset - Reset network settings
    • Settings/General/Reset - Reset All settings
    • Restore the phone using iTunes, and restore your backup at the end
    • Restore the phone using iTunes and DO NOT restore your backup; set up as a new phone. Test WiFi before doing any other setup steps.

If none of these resolve the problem it is most likely hardware.

Lawrence my wifi switch toggles on and off just fine. It is not greed out. Thanks for trying to help but I think I have a faulty hardware problem that was caused by the software upgrade unless its just coincidence.

It's a coincidence.  If it was the software, then all iPhones running that software would have the same issue.

If you've restored it as new, following the instructions in the article, and it still cannot connect to ANY wi-fi network, then it's a hardware issue.

Wi-Fi *was* ok on my iPhone 4s. But, this morning I updated to iOS 7.0.4 and now the option to turn Wi-Fi on in settings is greyed and therefore cannot be turned on. To top it as well, the battery has lost 60% in two or three hours even though the phone has not been used. I've tried everything I can think of but can't fix anything. It's either a heck of a co-incidence or its iOS 7.0.4 that has caused the problem as the change from 7.0.3 to 7.0.4 has made this happen.

Welcome to the "no way it's turned grey" club.

Everytime I read about this it's just like it happened to me.

Today I contacted an independent repair centre and he's says the wifi is dead when it greys out,

And that we as a group of people are left with no option other than to replace the phone.

This does not make it ok but everyone knows Apple cannot adjust the stance they have now set.

And when the WiFi previously grayed, works for a few minutes after 7.0.4 upgrade (and works fine!!!) and then it became grayed again? The WiFi is not burned...

Just it is too much coincidence that hundred of 4S owners broke their iphone at the same time!

    What a pitty!

Exactly right.  If it is a defective device, then just like with any other defective product, if you are within your warranty period, you get a replacement, either for free or at a reduced price, depending on the manufacturer's warranty.  If you are outside of warranty, you either replace it out of pocket at full retail, or get a replacement at a reduced price, again, based on the manufacturer's warranty.

In this case, it's free if within warranty, or reduced price if outside of warranty.  That's above and beyond what Apple is required to do.

Being able to replace an out-of-warranty device for a reduced price is pretty much the highest standard in the industry.  Can you name me an electronics manufacturer that does free replacements for defective devices that are outside of the warranty period?
