Q: iMovie 10 to 9 downgrade procedure

I've done a silly upgrade of my iMovie 9.0.4 to iMovie 10.0 and things didn't work well at all.

I've been asked if I wanted to convert my old event library and projects and I answered yes. Now in iMovie 10.0:

  • most of my 16:9 clips shooted with my old SD camcorder are 4:3
  • my old projects are in 16:9 but it's the 4:3 clips which are cut at the top and bottom to make them 16:9 (so the aspect ratio is wrong AND the image is cut)
  • my old projects are missing titles

Where can I find the procedure to downgrade to iMovie 9.0.4 ?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

THANK YOU!!!  I never thought I would still find the old iMovie 9 still in the Applications folder.

iMovie 10 has been a disaster ever since I "upgraded".  It bogs down my entire computer using up 100% of 8 CPU cores and doing absolutely nothing, can't even shut it down because it says there are operations in progress even one hour after it is done converting and importing.

Now I have my iMovie 9 back, and works like a charm!

    Thanks again!!

In case the iMovie 9 icon is not showing in Launchpad, here is a workaround:

Adding iMovie 9.0.9 back into Launchpad?

Also, found the installation link for iMovie 9.0.9 directly from an Apple KB update:

Do you know if Apple next release of iMovie will fix this problem with old 4:3 movies? I think that there are a lot of people like me that have these 4:3 movies, for example of when the children were younger, and it's a pity to have them cut in 16:9 aspect ratio, so I hope the Apple team will solve this problem.

Two days ago Apple posted an update to iMovie. It did solve some of the problems like the return of the events sorted by date, but many issues still remain. Among them the elimination of the 4:3 format, which renders the program useless for people working with old VHS material (which in many cases is more valuable than modern 16:9 material, due to the historical importance; for instance, I have material filmed in the eighties).

I consider iMovie 10 a total failure; as many remarked, it is extremely slow compared with its precedessor and many options and user interface elements have been eliminated (the only thing that's better seem to be the codec). All my old VHS projects are essentially useless, they have been converted to 16:9, essential image parts being cut out. In this process many fonts have been upscaled, so that now many captions are disproportionately large compared to the movie itself. I found no simple way to select all captions of a certain type and reduce their font size. And with several tens of projects, this is no simple task anyway. Thanks God that at least I still can use iMovie 9.

It seems Apple goes the way of excessively simplifying things in order to make them compatible with their iOS counterparts. If this continues, I will have to look elsewhere. I am contremplating buying Final Cut Pro, but for what I do as an amateur, the price is a bit too much. Moreover, who knows what Sir Jonathan Ive has on his mind, he might want one day to "simplify" FCP too, so once again a bad investment for me. I already lived through the Apperture experience, I bought it when it was 200 Euros, and now it's essentialy a dead software, seems nobody at Apple is working on this project anymore.

I'm having the same issue; finding iMovie 9.0-- in older threads, it seemed that at one point Apple had listed it as a downloadable app, but has since gotten rid of it (the link yields a 403), leaving only the version 9.0.x Upgrades. I have a MacbookPro 7,1 and recently did a clean install of Mavericks. Thusly, I no longer have my 9.0.9. Let me know if you find any routes to the version9.0 -- I'll keep looking and respond if I do.
