Since upgrading to Mavericks, when I try and double click on any file to open them directly, a window pops up saying "The application can't be found". If I open the application then go to Open... it lets me open any files still thankfully but this is a huge pain. Happening so far with InDesign, Preview, Word, HTML files and anything else I've tried. Anyone else having this problem??

Dismounting the server, then remounting it seems to solve the problem.
Unmount and mount again doesn't work for me. The trouble is only with samba shares, everything is fine with AFP shares and local files.
There is a fix.
When you mount server with the Connect to Server command in the Finder's Go menu, use not smb, but cifs, as follows:
cifs://server_name_or_ip_address
Then everything gets back to normal.
Mavericks uses SMB2 by default and doesn't switch to SMB1 or AFP if server doesn't support SMB2.
Had the same probs with my iMac at work, almost drived me crazy. I removed all the links to shares in the favorites section of the sidebar in finder and put them back again. Then it worked like it did before.

Had the same problem and Tuner72's answer fixed it.
This definitely fixed "The applicationcan't be found." issue, but when connecting to the server using cifs there is a very long delay before the files are displayed. Folders are quickly displayed, but the contentssometime take minutes to appear. Is this related to using cifs?
Disconnecting the server and reconnecting solved the problem
THe above solutions - CKTaylor and IceVT and Turner72 and sellput all worked. But problem keeps coming back.

This crap is happening to me too. Also network folders mounted in the sidebar disappear.
This OS is shockingly poor. I am truly happy I did not pay for it.
