MacBook 10.5.8 keeps rebooting

I just recently had a HDD crash and right now I am picking up the pieces to get back to snuff.

Now I am stuck with a reboot loop. I put in the install disk so I can get to Disk Utilities so I can check to see if it needs to be repaired but when "gathering information" Disk Utilities closes.

When I boot holding option it recognizes the drive and the disc.

What's the next plan of attack? I will just reformat if I have to, rather not if I don't have to.

Should I try a "safe mode" boot (which I didn't even know Mac had)?
