FileSharing using SMB - Password rejected by Windows 7

When connecting a Windows 7 system to Mac OS X 10.8 on my LAN, the username/password is rejected by the W7 system.

This started to happen recently to (only) one of my two identically configured Mac systems on the local network. The problem can be cleared by deselecting SMB filesharing and reselecting in SystemPreferences->FileSharing->Options (the username/password is then accepted). However it returns after the Mac System is restarted.

Any ideas?
