Macbook Pro 2008 running hot immediately after Mavericks upgrade

I immediately noticed that something was amiss right after updating my MBP 2008 with Mavericks.

When my machine rebooted after installation, my fans started going crazy. CPU temp was steady around 50 degrees C.

There were 5-6 mdworker processes running and when I went to finder, and selected applications in List mode, it was taking several seconds to display each application's size.

The fans were still spinning and temp jumping around from 45 to 55 degrees C. Waited a few minutes and then I disabled Spotlight from indexing my Google Drive, rebooted my machine and all seems to be working much cooler now.

FWIW.
