iMac 2010 stuck at boot after installing OS X Mavericks

After installing Mavericks on my 2010 iMac my iMac gets stuck at the boot logo and the spinning wheel beneath it after shutting it down in the evening and turning it on again this morning.

How can I solve this? I've tried everything from Safe Mode to Verbose Mode. I've tried Repair Disk and it said that my startup drive seemed OK.

I've now restored to 10.8.5 from my Time Machine-backup because I saw no way out, but I would really like to update to Mavericks and use the new iWork and iLife, but I'm scared this will happen again and my iMac is unusable. Any tips how to solve this issue?

Unfortunately the Mavericks Installer progressbars are not very user friendly. You just have to be patient with it. If you interrupted it before it clearly said it was done with the installation, you may have to reinstall. You may need to bring it in to service if you didn't make a backup or have a backup of the Mavericks installer program.
