Portable HDD w/ bluetooth for Ipad?

I'm looking for a portable hard disk drive to store movies on and play on my ipad. I think others must have wanted to do the saME.

What solutions are out there?

Bluetooth is extrememly slow to stream movies through.

Most, if not all wireless drives that do this type of thing use Wifi.

There are several brands that make them such as Kingston, and Seagate.

Most of these drives act as their own Wifi hotspot so the iPad can connect to them directly to stream media.

Hi,

You might want to add to the suggestions above by checking out the Sandisk Connect Wireless Media Drive - They sell a 32 gb flash drive version, too.

I suggest you read many user reviews for all brands on Amazon.com.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, all the listed devices use WiFi and there is one major disadvantage to WiFi! That is, if you are travelling, where only your data plan is available, you cannot use a WiFi hotspot device simultaneously with your cellular data plan.

This is a fault of the iPhone where the cellular data radio and the WiFi radio cannot work together.

This whole thing about BT not being fast enough is rather silly. BT 3.0 has a theoretical top speed of 3MB/s (I admit, I am unsure if that is burst or sustained)... but if that is sustained, it is plenty of speed (assuming good bandwidth) for streaming auto and down-converted HD video.

Obviously, such a device would absolutely need a USB connection to transfer content (BT is far too slow!). It would be nice if there was a device that offered WiFi hotspot with bridging and a BT 3.0 option.

I am particularly keen about such a device because my cellular data plan is very expensive, iTunes is absolutely horrible for transferring auto/video content to/from phone, Apple will NEVER give us what we want - expandable memory, and I want to run with music (on external storage) BUT still have internet for geo tracking and iMessages.

BTW, I purchased the Kingston MLW221 Mobilelite. A really nice portable storage device BUT it is useless for running b/c that WiFi hotspot knocks out my cellular Internet connection. 😠

This makes no sense . I can use my cellualr Radio and Wifi at the same time all the time on my iPhone. I can be browsing the web on Wifi and get calls and send text messages at the same time.

For an iPad its no different. You can have both things turned on. Connect to the Wifi network provided by the hard drive to stream the movie form it which would require no internet, and when you need internet simply turn off Wifi, and use the cell connection.

Yes, the iPad will default to try to get internet through the Wifi connection, but if you are streaming a movie its not like you are browsing the internet at the same time.

I think I understand what the poster is talking about. Many of the external drives that connect to iOS devices do so by creating their own WiFi network. If the iOS device is connected to that WiFi network, it cannot also be connected to the cellular data network. SMS doesn't use the cellular data network so it could be used at the same time, as could a voice calling.

It's never ben a big deal for me but it does seem to be so for some people. Sandisk, I believe, worked around this in one of their newer Sandisk Connect Wireless flash drives.

Yeah thanks, I gathered as much by the end hence my last statement:

I don't believe you can have the movie playing in the background with most of these drives's Apps. so its pretty much a moot point I think.

That is not what I was talking about but I think you sort of got it later on.

I cannot believe that my application is so unique. Please allow me to describe again. Often times, I go for multi-hour runs or hikes and I want to carry my portable music with me. Because it connects via WiFi hotspot, I lose my cellular data connection.

What's the big deal? The cellular data signal is used for my GPS tracking, Apple Find Friends, and iMessages applications; the later which isn't smart enough to switch over to standard SMS (APPLE!). This means I cannot track my progress, my family won't know where I am, and I cannot receive/send iMessages.

I found out all of this by accident during a 1/2 marathon I recently completed! Sucked that I was unaware that my family couldn't follow me. 😟

As a result, my Kingston MLW221 Mobilelite is useless! 😟

No, but while you are watching a movie (on the road/away from WiFi Internet) you may not want to miss iMessages or other services that require an Internet connection.
