Q: How to fix crashing iWork apps after updating to 10.9 Mavericks

This issue is caused by certain fonts within your Fontbook that are casuing iWork to crash.

What you will need to do is:

  1. Backup your font collection

  2. Restore Standard Fonts

Additionally, you might want to backup your existing fonts before moving forward by:

  1. Selecting all existing fonts
  2. File > Export Fonts...
  3. Save the fonts collection anywhere on your computer

Then you will be ready to restore stndard fonts:

  1. Select File > Restore Standard Fonts...
  2. Launch Pages, Numbers, or Keynote

How did you instal Pages 09 on the macbook? Where did you get the Pages 09 from the very beginning?

I kept it on a backup as a dmg-file. It did not come from the appstore,

    installation: follow the crumbs

Great, I hope the dmg file is the installation file. When it is installed you have to update to iWork 9.3 from here Download

I do not want to be rude, but … can you read?

I thought I explained what I did. There is no need to go round in circles.

the thing is, it does not work!

It seems to me you are rude...

@fruhulda was asking if you applied all the updates to iwork93 since you reinstalled from the DMG as the assumption is your original DMG file is an earlier build of iwork. Have you done this ?

    Hey Folks,

I've received notifications every time someone posts "this didn't work for me". That's great and all, but we do not have any idea how you have you system configured or how your computer is setup.

If this fix didn't work for you, then you may have a deeper issue other than fonts and this is not the solution for you.

    Let's try this:

    1. Go to System Preferences > Users & Groups
    2. Create a new Admin User
    3. Logout out & login under the new user
    4. Check to see if the issue is still occurring

This will help you to figure if it's a system wide issue or a user account specific issue.

If it's a user account issue, your problem exist within your hidden .library folder by default. Access the .library folder by selecting Go from the top menu and holding down the option key. This will present a Library option in the menu. This is where you will need to figure out what's causing your particular issue.

If it is a system wide issue, then I would recommend uninstalling iWorks and reinstalling.

In my case and in "most" cases, it was due to a laundry list of 3rd party fonts that prohibited iWorks from launching properly after upgrading to Mavericks.

Is it the end of the world? No, it's not, however it is impossible for any software developer to release major updates to an operating system without "something" happening due to the infinite configuration possibilities and "who knows" what kind of installed software that is running on your computer.

I would encourage you to keep searching for your answers or to visit an Apple Store for assistance.

Please re-read the above to get into sync.

Jol, if you're commenting about me...you're using my post as a stomping ground for your problems and being a litter bug.

    Hi Chris,

Thank you for the previous. At least someone tries to keep the eyes on the ball.

I have no idea for anyone else, I did try your suggestion to determine whether it is systemwide or user-based, it was the first thing I did.

    The problem is systemwide unfortunately.

I did uninstall and re-install. no result

I also checked for 'extra's' (fonts) bt none of those were there (this system is kept quite clean, as I only use this computer to run a couple of programs. Nothing els goes on in terms of dynamics like frequently installing en testing/trying out software. it is a business computer and there for a workhorse: pages, numbers, evernote and standard stuff)

Thanks  for the advise so far.

I think I will start a total clean install tomorrow starting to build up from ML, making a partition with 10.9, and if all works I could dare to update.

    fingers crossed.

Hi, if your referring to me then I too have had this problem and used @ChrisTMiller advice on resolution (refer earlier posts). In reinstalling my iwork from the original DMG I had to reapply the updates from the Apple Support Downloads before iwork would launch successfully.

sorry about that. I was not aware.

It looks that we come from different places and all have very different backgrounds and ways to express. this obviously works two-ways.

I have no idea what a 'stomping ground' or a 'litter bug' is, but it sounds not nice (my English is quite good, but this aretypical expressions I guess)

    oke, clear.

unfortunately for me it (still) does not work.

    I'll keep trying though.

It would be a bummer to have to go through all of that just for a silly issue, however, always choosing the path of the least resistance never hurts.

Here are a few questions that would help:

    • Is this giving you any error codes?
    • If no, is it launching then quitting immediately?

Since we identified that it is a system-wide issue, we need to think about the resources iWorks uses from the system library that could be causing this issue.

If you have exhausted all "font" related avenues and the problem still occurs, it's tough to say what it could possibly be, since iWorks stays self contained and borrows limited and necessary core properties from the OS to run.

When I originally posted this issue and the fix, that was the very week I installed Mavericks and other than that particular issue, I've had no other issues since.

    This intrigues me.

I get it Jo!, however, the point I am making is that you're looking for the answer in the wrong place.

    I'll define the terms used:

    Stomping ground = a place

Litter Bug = using the authors post to drag out a similar but unrelated issue

If my fix did not work for you, then you and the others have a different root cause, therefore, I would recommend searching for the answer, formatting, or taking it into an Apple Store.

I agree, it does intrigue me as well. But, I doe not have much time, since i have a (relative new) business to run. This is very time-consuming.

These matters are a pain in the rear, for I expect things to keep working. That's why I chose Apple about 25 years ago. I started from system 4 I think an have seen 'the lot'. this kind of thing has never happened before though.

the error it gave is listed in the post above: Jan 14, 2014 2:15 PM

My gut-feeling (not bases on anything) says it must have something to do with the app-store. The version of iWorks I have is from just before it turned up in the app store. I never got it to update through this medium, always through downloads.

I thiink the Trouble started actually a bit before I installed Maverics. At the time I gave it no attention though.

What happend is that suddenly pages dit not start up when double-clicking a document, without any apparent reason. I could only open it from within pages. This is all before Mavrics was installed. Still, … it worked.

Well, if someone has an idea  :-)

Re-installing might work. Full (and double)erasing the disk may help as well.
