Installed Mavericks and now my system partition needs repair

Hi All,

I upgraded to Mavericks yesterday, but after the install my MBP's performance/responsiveness was substantially degraded.

Today (after reading posts from users experiencing similar issues on the forum) I ran disk utility. After verifying the disk, the utility told me there was a problem with my system partition, and that I would need to run disk utility from recovery mode (cmd + r).

I did so, and when I verify the disk from recovery it returns: "The partition map needs to be repaired because there's a problem with the EFI system partition's file system". When I attempt to repair the partition, I receive an alert that: "Live file system repair is not supported".

Now I can't even boot into the log-in page, and the only area I can access (aside from the blank grey screen with a picture of a folder on it) is the recovery mode. I would really like to avoid re-installing Lion from recovery mode and losing all my programs, settings, etc. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

All problems are still there

1 Do a Verify on the Mac HD Volume and it either does not complete or does not report completion. The Log File suggests it has but we only see less than half of the usual details of the procedure.

2 Boot using Option at Startup and go into Disk Utiliity.

Repairing the DISK produces the Red line warning that live files cannort be repaired.

3 All the reported ACLs that apparently should not be there are supposedly fixed but -- in reality all stays the same.

As the French say -- Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose!

Disk Warrior solved the problem for me as well. I never believed in "software that does magic", but Disk Warrior worked where all built-in recovery/repair tools in OS X failed, so it is a bit magical 😁.

You just need to fork out a 100 bucks, and the rest is a piece of cake.

The operation is also very easy, even for an unskilled user. You just need to:

1. Boot to your recovery partition (hold the option key during startup of your Mac)

2. Through recovery tools, install OS X on an external hard drive (may need to be formatted fror Mac). After installation, skip all the registrations, connections to network etc. - you won't need it. Just set up one user and that's it

3. Boot from the external hard drive

4. Download Disk Warrior

5. Install Disk Warrior

6. Run it. Point to your internal HDD with the faulty system files

7. Let Disk Warrior do the magic

8. Enjoy your system as it was prior to the problems, with no need for formatting, copying etc. All in 20 minutes (excluding the OS X download and install time).

had the same prob: did target mode and diskwarrior with another mpb. got mine to boot, did a full tm and formatted, reinstalled and integrated old system.

but still - ever since the first crash, which up until everything was working better than ever, the whole system seems to lag, i get grey screens a lot on reboot, programs wont open etc.

has anyone experienced the same with ssd (system drive) + another internal hdd in the optical slot - and moreover, found a solution to this?

cheers!

Same here! Well i guess Apple has a lot to learn from this system since Steve is gone. Sorry but we can't omit the fact that the man is gone, and since then I am scared that Apple will vanish as well. It seems that this is what is coming and very soon. I love Apple and i don't want to see it dies.

To whoever is currently in charge, please take action to really make this work. It requires hard work and lot of energy, so if you agreed to take control of what Steve put in place so make his legacy worth what it worths when Steve was alive.

Releasing an Upgrade and making our Data vanish is unacceptable. What is the next step to take action against this stupid release that is causing and destroying my work?

hhhhrrrrrr......so mad now. I really hate that........well let face it is done, now what else????????

I've read through the whole thread and the only thing I haven't tried is booting from an external drive since I don't have another mac and can't arrange for one for a few days.

Did anything work for you @churchj7 ? Please let me know. Can't boot MacBook Pro at all. Gets stuck on white screen with logo and round dial , safe mode doesn't work and neither does recovery. Had the Same exact errors in disk repair but now they are gone.

FWIW, I might posted this before but can't look back and paste it...first upgrade/install of 10.9 went fine, did a time machine backup right after it was done. then after two reboots and fixing permissions, all went fine till the third reboot. Yup the white screen and round dial upon boot up, nothing fixed it. Took out the hd, put in a new hd. Then by using time machine, I was able to restore to the initial hd state right after installing 10.9 over 10.8.x. *but* only on the replacement hd. Didn't fix any permissions and not using any disk utiliy until 10.9.1 was released. Diskwarrior was the only utility that got me access to the nonbootable hd, wiped it and using it only as a temp. storage. Since I only buy apple laptops with FW 400 or 800, it was easy and quick enough to restore, and had a backup MBP I was using until this got back on track. HTH.
