Time Machine couldn't complete the backup

Hello,

last few day my friend gets this message on his MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2009, running OS X 10.8):

It appears repeatedly. Seems like Time Machine can't clean old backups for some reason.

anybody has any ideas what to do?
