Maya users need to avoid upgrading to Mavericks

Users of Maya 2013 need to avoid Mavericks, as 2013 will not be supported on the new OS.
Maya 2014 users should also be aware that the Autodesk has not tested the latest version with Mavericks fully, and that there are many reported issues when it comes Maya and Mavericks.

It is important to realize that whenever a new OS version comes out, there aren't any radical changes from the version before - none! There are many new features, but those don't impact any current software. Things that actually break are things that never should be been done to begin with. Or they are things that Apple publicly told developers they were going to stop supporting in 6 or 7 years.

So, yes, Apple is running with lots of cutting edge code and some of that is flaky. But any 3rd party with software that breaks on Mavericks has been ignoring warning from Apple for years. They haven't fixed it because it wasn't broken. Until now. There is a certain crass business logic to that approach. Why spend money to make a change if it isn't broken. After all, people usually put the blame on Apple, don't they?

Yes, darn iPhone auto correct. I meant Apple apps. Glad you have no issues but if you follow the forums, tons of them. So if Apple cannot make their own software work flawlessly, then third party developers, who without, Apple would have no users, cannot be expected to have software ready either. And being that Maya and Autodesk products are the most important CG apps on the Mac, my post was to warn those who assume the OS will work flawlessly. As a professional animator, it's my bread and butter, and for many as well.

Then you have trolls like Blob...

I can confirm that Maya 2013 works on mavericks, except for one crippling bug.

The app crashes when you try to batch render with mental ray. Otherwise it works fine and I've been using it for weeks.

it should be noted that the issue exists when executing a batch render from the command line as well. My guess is some sort of memory allocation issue due to how Mavericks "flattens" memory space.

strange thing is, a machine running mavericks can act as a slave machine for mental ray sattelite network rendering. you just have to start the render on a machine running 10.8 or earlier.

I've tested this on a macbook pro retina 15" with a Geforce 650, and a Mac Pro with a Quadro 4000 with the same results.

EDIT: even though 2013 isn't the latest maya it is still a supported product. I wouldn't be suprised if a service pack comes out down the line. I really hope it does.

I wish I had checked that before. I updated to Mavericks and everything was running fine, until I had to batch render with Mental Ray. I payed good money for 2013 license - Autodesk can't just say it wont support it on the new system - it's not even that old! And to makes things worse, you can't upgrade because of a license glitch. And uninstalling Maya or reverting the system back to Mountain Lion is a humongous pain in the ***. F*** you Autodesk. Why do you charge so much on a software and then let your users hanging like that? This is seriusly affecting my work.
