Q: iMovie '13 "dumbed down" compared to iMovie '11

It appears that Apple has decided to make the Mac versions of iLife and iWorks apps identical to the IOS versions on the iPad. This required a "dumbing down" of the Mac versions which they did in the newly released versions. I see this in iMovie '13 which among other missing old features is the ability to group Projects into folders (like Family, Vacations, etc.) which is extremely important when you have a few dozen or more projects.

 

In another forum, it is clear they did the same thing with iWorks:

As a dedicated user of the iWork applications I looked forward to seeing what new features Apple was going to support. I cannot tell you how disappointed I am - all three represent regressions IMHO. Read through the discussion about Pages, Keynote and Numbers, and you will see right away that people are deeply puzzled with the features that have vanished. It sure seems in an effort to make the iWork apps more like their iOS cousins that Apple has dumbed down and severely limited the OS X versions.

From missing vertical rulers and loss of merge fields in Pages to the loss of a number of transitions and actions in Keynote the lists go on and on. I am certainly glad that installing the new apps does not remove the old - as I am really forced to stay with the older versions to keep the level of features I have been used to. Those of you who value the advanced features of the previous version of iWork *please* avoid dumping the old apps until you *really* get a chance to see what isn't there in the new versions. Lots of flash and less substance!

    I would say that this imovie 13 is horrendously bad! They made a complete mess out of imovie. The bar was set very high with imovie 11, but I cannot stand the changed features such as the adjust button, lack of inspector, dragging the ends of videos to change time. The export options in 11 are wonderful. Apple seems to have a common theme of simplifying things... but when simplifying, things get dumbed down! I will not use imovie 13, and I want nothing to do with it. I plan to use 11, and I am glad I still get to use it by using the applications folder. Shame on apple for forcing us into a horrible product. I demand a new version like 11!

    Don't bother with your applications folder.  Just put an iMovie 11 alias on your dock.

    I don't like the new designs, like you said, except on iOS.

    On iOS, I like all 6 of the new apps

    On Mac, I only like the new iPhoto and Pages (note that I only HAVE Pages, GarageBand, iMovie, and iPhoto.)

    I deleted the older versions of all the upgrades and I never got the new GarageBand (I only use the iOS version).

     

    Personally, I just use these apps for fun and home use, not for business, so my only problem is that it takes longer for me to learn these new designs.

     

    If the free apps don't have enough features, get some pro apps.

    The old iMovie 9 ('11) use to put a green check mark by the pictures I used in a video when adding from iPhoto library from within iMovie... the new iMovie 10 ('13) does not let you know which pictures you have used after adding to a timeline.  Drives me crazy! (I can't remember which pic I added when I have 50 of them in an album or event).  Is there a way to turn this on??  I can't believe this is no longer there.  Thanks.

    I  also found that is does not show you the dates so you don't know when the video was taken.  Having a mixture of both iphoto Video's and videos from my cannon camera.  It is a major pain to sync up events so they are in the same order.  They should really combine imported events with iPhone events so they are in the same spot for editting. Hey a new feature that would be useful.

    I am glad that I am not the only one.  The deletion of the green checkmark was a terrible decision.  I sometimes bring in a hundred photos and carefully insert and delete to match and strengthen the video.  Without the checkmark feature, it is extremely difficult to know which photos were previously selected.  There are workarounds such as only importing small numbers from a large album or event, but the workarounds should not be necessary.  I have totally given up on iMovie 13.  The entire iLife 13 suite holds no advantages over iLife 11, because the features added are not of interest to my 30 minute to 1 hour dvd movie projects.  I began my computer life with an Apple IIplus, and now use a custom built iMac, we have 2 iPhones(a 5 and a 5S), 2 iPads (iPad IV and iPad Air), a 2013 Macbook Air.  I always enjoyed the integration of all Apple hardware and software -- until the past 2 years.  Spredsheets made from the current version of NUMBERs on my iMac no longer display correctly when brought into iWeb software.  I do not believe Mr. Cook is aware of the impact of his software changes.  It won't take to much more frustration before I begin looking at PCs.  I f a staunch Apple loyalist such as myself makes the move next year, then so will millions of consumers.  Apple needs to add features, not change and eliminate them.

    Agree Stormy.

    I sometimes add 50-100 pics. Without this feature I am dead in the water.

    I wish they would just add features. Not take away the ones we are all use too.

    Very painful. I sent feedback to Apple about this.

    I just saw an ad for a couple of high end Dell or HP (can't remember which) PCs.  The ad said something like "you asked for it and here it is - brand new high end machines with Windows 7" - not windows 8.   So, apple should take a hint and hear us and fully support iMovie 11.

    What does an ad for PCs have to do with iMovie?

     

    So, apple should take a hint and hear us and fully support iMovie 11.

     

    What aspect of iMovie 11 is Apple not supporting?

    Alan.... Perfect example above. Nobody can easily see what pictures are being added to the timeline during making of a movie. That is a huge problem.  An event with 700 pictures... Who's gonna remember the 40-50 they have been added.  Bring back the green check mark. Giant step backwards!

    Just an example of a company acquiescing to consumers and doing a "180" - ie - the return of Windows 7 as an analogy to our wish for the return to support for iMovie 11.  Probably a bad example, but just trying to be "creative" in my complaining.....  Sorry.

    It seems not to be possible anymore to import an iMovie Project from iOS into iMovie 13 or iMovie 11 and go on with the cutting on the Mac. So if anyone tells me that iLife or iWorks should get more compatible with the according iOS versions, I can t agree. I phoned Apple Support and apparently they are not even aware of the changes. It took me about 2 hours and I ended up receiving an eMail with a link to this thread.

     

    I first was really surprised and impressed that Mavericks was given to us for free. Regarding iLife and iWorks I have the feeling please do charge me and provide me the software I can use and need and doesn t kill the good and innovative image of Apple. It seems to me, that more and more decisions within Apple are taken by financial and business aspects and not anymore by the user experience, design and innovation, which created the success, also financial, in the past.

    If they go on like this, Apple cycles down to a MeToo like Dell, HP, Samsung or others. Come on Tim - you can do better than that!

    Anyone realize the Chapter Markers are also gone, as is the export to Quicktime?  This is another exmaple of Apple trying to marry IOS and OSX..  When I buy a computer, I want programs that are geared for a computer, not programs neutered or dumbed down because they also "run" on an IOS device.

     

    Don't cripple the users of computers ... if mobile device users want more functionality, let them buy computers like the rest of us speaking here... APPLE, why is that hard to understand?  I DON'T want my Macbook Pro to act like an iPhone or iPad..  I want it to be a workhorse machine...  That goes for my Mac Pro as well..

    Yes.

     

    If you upgraded, you'll find that you still have iMovie version 9 in your Applications folder.

    You're kind of just preaching to the choir here.

    I want it to be a workhorse machine...  That goes for my Mac Pro as well..

     

     

    If you have a Mac Pro you might want to consider Final Cut Pro X. It's more of a workhorse app to go with a workhorse machine.
