Q: iMovie '13 "dumbed down" compared to iMovie '11

It appears that Apple has decided to make the Mac versions of iLife and iWorks apps identical to the IOS versions on the iPad. This required a "dumbing down" of the Mac versions which they did in the newly released versions. I see this in iMovie '13 which among other missing old features is the ability to group Projects into folders (like Family, Vacations, etc.) which is extremely important when you have a few dozen or more projects.

 

In another forum, it is clear they did the same thing with iWorks:

As a dedicated user of the iWork applications I looked forward to seeing what new features Apple was going to support. I cannot tell you how disappointed I am - all three represent regressions IMHO. Read through the discussion about Pages, Keynote and Numbers, and you will see right away that people are deeply puzzled with the features that have vanished. It sure seems in an effort to make the iWork apps more like their iOS cousins that Apple has dumbed down and severely limited the OS X versions.

From missing vertical rulers and loss of merge fields in Pages to the loss of a number of transitions and actions in Keynote the lists go on and on. I am certainly glad that installing the new apps does not remove the old - as I am really forced to stay with the older versions to keep the level of features I have been used to. Those of you who value the advanced features of the previous version of iWork *please* avoid dumping the old apps until you *really* get a chance to see what isn't there in the new versions. Lots of flash and less substance!

    This seems true for apple products period. Do you know of a better movie editing system?

    Apple for some reason has a grudge on DVDs and they are trying to purge it.

     

    99% of my clients demand the final product on DVD.

    I know, it is very annoying. I can maybe understand if they were to do this to a lite device where portability is a must, but for the average consumer, we like to have the option to use a dvd/cd. At first it seemed like it was to be removed for the macbook air only, then they took it out of the mac mini, then the macbook pro, and now the imacs. I am sick and tired of lugging around the usb superdrive, and now I am finding software companies less inclined to offer a nice cd for their downloads.I think this is a dealbreaker, and I do not plan on purchasing another apple computer until they put some CD drives back. It simply isn't worth the trouble. Apple, listen to your customers!

    So far I went back to imovie 2011 rather than using 2013. I don't plan on ever using 2013 and if they ever took the 2011 version off my computer, I would have no choice but to discontinue using imovie. I cannot use imovie 2013 and I refuse a product as signifigantly downgraded from it's previous version. It just doesn't make sence to do that.

    I hate the new version too! Was happy to find the hidden old version....

    I could use 9.0.9 untill the latest fix/update, now I go to open it, the tab says it;s open, but the screen is hiding in upper right corner. it comes down if I file-new project- shows up and I click ok, and it pops out of view.

     

    No one to help me out with this yet!

     

    They should NOT have messed with it, I can't figure out how to make a project from events! And I've made about 100+ projects. Although, I like the way u can work on past projects while importing, they alienated us supporters to gain novices?? It was more comprehensible the other way. Now they're gonna loose everyone.

    I also dislike the new iMovie 13. The export options for files (bitrate, size, compression etc) are non existent and produce huge files. The old export via QuickTime was lightyears better. This new dumbed down manner is simply ridiculous.

     

    iMovie 13 -> Grade F for FAIL.

    When I recently switched from PC to Mac, I was excited to use iMovie b/c  my friends have Macs with iMovie '11. It looked very easy to use. But then I got my Mac and got a new version of iMovie and was very sad. So I got the old version and was SO HAPPY! Now I use iMovie '11 and Final Cut Pro X. My Mac is a MacBook Air Early 2014 running OS X Yosemite.Screen Shot 2015-05-11 at 4.45.56 PM.png
