Q: Mouse cursor lags with external monitor

hello,

i have just purchased a dell u2913wm monitor with a native resolution of 2560x1080. when connected to my macbook air (with mountain lion) using a mini displayport cable my cursor starts lagging on both screens. basically, when i move the mouse along a line on my desk the cursor results in a very erratic trajectory. this occurs when using a usb mouse and with the integrated trackpad. if the monitor is turned off or unplugged the mouse is smooth again. .

a similar problem was reported a few years ago but somehow the thread is just archived ( https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1965949?start=0&tstart=0 ).

also, i had trouble with the monitor that osx recognised it as ypbpr, so i had to force it to treat it as rgb device, because otherwise the image was unsharp.

on my macbook (mid 2010) running mavericks the cursor is smooth, so the monitor and the cable are apparently not faulty.

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

I have same issue with mbp 15 mid 2012, os x 10.10 and lg 29um55 connected via miniDP - DP cable. Connect via hdmi don't help and in addition max resolution limited to 1920x1080 instead of 2560x1080.

Two years ago, on os x 10.8, when i connected another full hd monitor via hdmi, mouse lags similarly.

Same issue on a 2014 rMPB. I assume it's some conflict between HDMI monitors and the USB driver, in certain circumstances. The only way I know to alleviate it is to unplug and replug the mouse. Fortunately it only seems to happen once a day for me.

Same problem here but with a 27 Samsung monitor:

    MacBook Air mid 2012

    1.7 GHz i5

    4 GB AM

    intel HD graphics 4000

    Samsung S27C350 Monitor

Apple really has to do something. Nearly 10 pages of complains should be enough...

Hello to all my fellow frustrated users!

I think I can help us reach a solution.

Is it ridiculous that Apple doesn't seem to scan their own pages to resolve known bug issues? OF COURSE. Do they know this is a problem? OF COURSE. Here's how I see it: this problem is not really a problem because we are not the loudest voice in the room. Apple probably has some system of tallying complaints related to certain bugs. When the tally reaches a threshold, they decide to do something about it. So why not this bug? Well, they are probably devoting attention to the tens of thousands of teens out there crying about the latest changes to their iDevices on iOS8. Moral of the story: I don't think we are raising a big enough cry about this. I think the only way that we will get their attention is by submitting feedback. And I mean LOTS of it. I suggest we team up. More specifically, go here https://www.apple.com/feedback/ and make sure to reference THIS thread.

And tell them what you are telling us. I have started to do this every time I use my external display and encounter the problem. I plan on submitting feedback as often as I encounter the problem (almost daily). Hopefully, they will take notice. That seems like the right thing to do if you care about your customers. Thanks to all who have endured and continue to submit feedback despite the lack of changes.

Fuenticito, that is a great suggestion. I just submitted feedback and I will do so again every time I have the issue, which is several times a day. I created a text doc with the feedback link, and my feedback, which I'll keep open on my desktop to speed up the process. Note that you only get so many characters so be concise. Hopefully, If everyone does this Apple will not continue to ignore the issue.

I found a solution that fixed it for me. I added a USB extension cable (just one I found for cheap on amazon) between the mouse and the computer and I no longer get mouse lag. Worked for my wired mouse and for my wireless logitech.

    Good luck!

I'm also having this problem with the U28D590 4k Samsung Monitor when using PIP/PBP. It's really annoying. I submitted feedback referencing this thread and I also reccomend everyone else does as well.

Toggling the display port version from 1.2 to 1.1 back to 1.2 only worked the first time I tried it. I turned the monitor off and on and now it doesn't seem to do anything.

This is not a mouse problem. It's a display problem.

This is one of those things that, like iTunes Home Sharing, will never be fixed (or, it seems, even acknowledged).

Actually, after more experimentation, it might be a monitor issue. I'm getting the same behavior in windows also. I'm not sure what is causing the problem. Maybe it's just HDMI lag? The first monitor is connected via DP.

I am having the same issue with my MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013) 2.6 GHz i5, 8GB Ram, Intel Iris 1536 MB graphics card, and a ViewSonic VG2236wm-LED external monitor connected through a DisplayPort > DVI adapter. I also just submitted this to the feedback link.

Same works for me - choose the monitor's menu, go up and down in the menu; exit the menu;  all is wonderful.  Go figure.
