Q: Mouse cursor lags with external monitor

hello,

i have just purchased a dell u2913wm monitor with a native resolution of 2560x1080. when connected to my macbook air (with mountain lion) using a mini displayport cable my cursor starts lagging on both screens. basically, when i move the mouse along a line on my desk the cursor results in a very erratic trajectory. this occurs when using a usb mouse and with the integrated trackpad. if the monitor is turned off or unplugged the mouse is smooth again. .

a similar problem was reported a few years ago but somehow the thread is just archived ( https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1965949?start=0&tstart=0 ).

also, i had trouble with the monitor that osx recognised it as ypbpr, so i had to force it to treat it as rgb device, because otherwise the image was unsharp.

on my macbook (mid 2010) running mavericks the cursor is smooth, so the monitor and the cable are apparently not faulty.

    UPDATE:

It seems like the issue is caused by OS X. I've switched to another mac, a mid-2012 15" Retina MBP and the problem occurs on this model too.

    This is bad news.

I saw the same behavior on my new Dell U2713HM. I was using a Logitech wireless mouse. I fixed the problem by plugging the mouse tranciever directly into the USB of the Mac. If I plug the tranciever into the monitor and connect the monitor USB to the Mac, the jumpy mouse problems return.

I have reported this issue as a bug at apple bug report.

After answering some questions form engineering and sending a system report all I got back was this:

"Engineering has determined that this is not to be fixed."

No more info than that, sigh

I have just solved a similar problem on a 2013 Macbook Air.

This might sound strange, but the problem was the power cable!

I changed the cable from a grounded cable to a ungrounded cable. Using the cable without ground resolved the lagging problem.

    Hope this helps someone!

It appears that I can confirm this issue as well, a customer came in with a Retina 15" MacBook Pro, fully decked out with every option. He said it cost him nearly $4,000.

We absolutely could not understand why every time an external monitor was plugged in, either Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort OR HDMI, that the performance just took a nosedive, and it would take the computer as long as four seconds to do something trivial like a mouse click on a menu item.

This sounds like a firmware/graphics card driver issue that needs to be addressed. Customer was running 10.9.3.

In my opinion the problem in the near future will not be solved.

I'm already half a year with the cursor lags, and the problem to them has not been solved.

My patience coming to an end, I think that selling my Mac Mini and buy windows laptop.

    Very disappointed.

Same problem here with my 27'' imac late 2009 and a brand new Dell U2713H...

The lagging mouse problem happen on each restart. So I have to toggle the DisplayPort 1.2 state on the Delll monitor. Then I'm able to work normally. No problem at all when I boot the imac with windows 7.

We know that on their web site : Dell recommends Windows.

But, please, give me a break !

You don't have to toggle the DisplayPort 1.2 state to temporarliy fix the issue.  You will notice if you just go into the monitor menu, move up and down the menu items, and exit, it will fix it just the same.

Thanks hugh2323, very strange behavior but, using this trick, it will be easier to live with that untill Apple or Dell found a solution ...

Have you connected power (charger) to macbook or are you using it on battery? I have not noticed problem while on charger (or sleep timeout is too long)

I was working with Air late 2011 and U2713H and had no problems at all.

Bought recently a new MacBook Pro retina 13 late 2013 and was shocked with U2713H oversharpening and mouse laging. Overshapr was fixed with ruby script, but no luck to fix the mouse....

This is so sad people have to face problems because global producers want to force customers buy products only from them!

Especially I don't like ACD because it doesn't give me all possible settups of U2713H, not even uniformity compensation

Ok, now it's getting even more frustraded.

Today I've tried my MacBook Pro retina 13 late2013 with NEC PA241w and EVERYTHING was OK!

    Same cable thunderbolt=>displayport.
So it means that Apple just doesn't want to make it's products to work with Dell correctly.

    Hello friends. Some new information.

About two weeks ago I sold my Dell 2713H Revision A00 (by reason of the cursor lags) and bought a monitor Dell U3014 (Revision A03, January 2014).

    Lags cursor is disappeared!!!!!!!!!!!!

They are no more!!!! I am happy!!!!!!

I understand it all depends more on the revision of the monitor...

I have the same problem with a Late 2013 Macbook pro Retina and 2 Dell U2413.

The mouse cursor is lagging and flickering each 2-3 seconds

    2000$ the macbook pro + 1300$ two screens and I can't get a proper result :/
