Q: Mouse cursor lags with external monitor

hello,

i have just purchased a dell u2913wm monitor with a native resolution of 2560x1080. when connected to my macbook air (with mountain lion) using a mini displayport cable my cursor starts lagging on both screens. basically, when i move the mouse along a line on my desk the cursor results in a very erratic trajectory. this occurs when using a usb mouse and with the integrated trackpad. if the monitor is turned off or unplugged the mouse is smooth again. .

a similar problem was reported a few years ago but somehow the thread is just archived ( https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1965949?start=0&tstart=0 ).

also, i had trouble with the monitor that osx recognised it as ypbpr, so i had to force it to treat it as rgb device, because otherwise the image was unsharp.

on my macbook (mid 2010) running mavericks the cursor is smooth, so the monitor and the cable are apparently not faulty.

Currently running OS X 10.9.3 and still experiencing pretty significant lagging with the wireless bluetooth mouse.  Running two external LG/23''inch monitors via HDMI to USB adapters.  Have turned off and back on, changed batteries, deleted old system pref, and still the curser lags.  Any suggestions?

I am currently running OS X 10.9.3 using a Dell u2713HM and experience significant jumps despite the hope from some posts that 10.9.3 would fix it. I've tried the displayport version changes as well as dissabling DDC/CI. I've shut it off, unplugged it, rebooted, shut down, plugged the mouse USB direct to the macbook pro, etc and had no luck. I would say every 10 seconds or so the mouse jumps as much as half of the monitor. I just received the monitor last week. Prior to using the new monitor I had never experienced this problem. Any suggestions?

I took, have this issue, even after 10.9.3

I have tested the following conditions

    Condition 1

Macbook Pro Retina, late 2013 (10.9.3) in clamshell or open, with 1 or 2 external displays

Samsung SyncMaster S27B350 connected either HDMI, or thunderbolt to HDMI (adaptor is Apple, PNY, or generic, I've tried them all)

Logitech M705 mouse (wireless) -OR- Apple mouse

    Result - Mouse skips erratically

    Condition 2

#1 but with wired Microsoft Mouse (5 year old mouse, not sure on the model)

Result - mouse is smooth, but freezes for 1 second every 30 seconds or so

    Condition 3

Macbook (10.9.3) in clamshell or open, with 1 or 2 external displays

    Apple thunderbolt display(s)

    Logitech M705 mouse (wireless)

    Result - Mouse skips erratically

    Condition 4

#3 but with wired Microsoft Mouse (5 year old mouse, not sure on the model)

Result - seems to be ok

    Condition 5

Macbook (10.9.3) in clamshell or open, with 1 or 2 external displays

1 Acer monitor through HMDI, 1 x-star monitor (connected using this since monitor requires Dual Link DVI)

Also, mouse is connected through USB hub

Result - seems to be ok

(I think this is surprising, and is the reason I didn't bring it up before, as this is my home setup.  I think it's significant because the X-star monitor has no logic board in it.  It's literally a display with only a single valid input, a DUAL-LINK DVI)

    Condition 6

Macbook pro with no external display and any mouse

    Result - Always ok

    Condition 7

Any external displays with built-in trackpad

Result - seems to be ok, but harder to tell

I have the same problem. Macbook Pro 13 with Retina late 2013, Dell U2211H (via hdmi-dvi adapter, monitor doesn't have hdmi-port), Logitech Anywhere MX. Logitech driver is installed, OS X 10.9.3 Apple, wake up!

I am also experiencing this issue running 10.9.3 on a Macbook Pro Retina 15. I am using two Apple-brand display-port/Thunderbolt to dual-link DVI adapters to two Asus 2560x1440 monitors. Video is great, but the mouse frequently lags or moves unevenly.

I'm running 10.9.4 and Logitech Control Center 3.9.1 and also has the lags.

When I have no monitor connected, the mouse cursor is smooth without any problem, but when I connect my Dell U2713HM the mouse is laggy almost every 10s. In Logitech Control Center and Unifying SW I can see that mouse is active and when I see lag on the screen in the software shows mouse inactive..

    Is there any new solution?

Turn off 'Enhanced' setting in the monitor's own display options. It's not going to make it perfect, but it fixes the jaggedness...

Hi, I have a very similar issue, although the problem only occurs when the external monitor is powered off (or displaying input from another source whilst still connected to my Macbook.)

I have a Late 2013 13" Retina Macbook Pro running the latest Mavericks (10.9.4) and I connect it to a BenQ GL2450H monitor using a HDMI cable via the Macbook's dedicated HDMI port. I also connect the monitor to a PC via the DVI input, and regularly switch the monitor between the two sources. This was working fine until very recently.

However, over the last few days (since the 10.9.4 update I think) if I turn the monitor off, or switch it to the PC, the mouse on my Macbook keeps freezing up (in fact, I think it's the display itself that is freezing, rather than the mouse which appears to 'jump' every time the display recovers.)

As soon as I switch the monitor back on / change the input source back to my Macbook, everything works perfectly again! Literally the second I hit the power switch in the monitor, the Macbook is restored to normal operation. If I power off again, the freezing starts once more. As far as I can tell, the Macbook is running perfectly normally otherwise, even when affected by the freezing issues. There are no processes eating up all my CPU / RAM. I've also tried resetting both the SMC and PRAM.

Has anyone else encountered this issue?

    Thanks,

    James.

Yep, I have exactly the same problem as you have!

I have connected 24" Samsung SyncMaster 2443 via HDMI-DVI and when I turn it off, my mouse is laggy and freezing constantly.

    It's quite irritating

    It certainly is irritating

Out of interest, are you 100% sure it's the mouse freezing and not the display freezing?

In my case, I think it's actually the display that freezes, and when it un-freezes, the mouse pointer will suddenly jump to its actual current position (given all the mouse movements I made during the freeze.)

Try this: have some animated content playing in a window (e.g. a video) and then turn off the external display. In my case, the video also freezes when the mouse 'freezes'. When I turn the display back on again, the video will suddenly jump forward, suggesting it was playing fine during the freeze, and it was just the display updates that were frozen.

Also - did you have this problem before you updated to 10.9.4?

Yes! You are right, in this situation the monitor is frozen

Thanks for testing that!  Sounds like you have exactly the same issue as me.

When did this problem start for you?  I'm pretty sure I only starting seeing issues after installing 10.9.4 a few days ago.

I'm not sure. I have my MBP just for 2 weeks now. When I connected my monitor at first, I just get strange lagging mouse cursor from my Logitech Performance MX . No change after update and than after few days it disappeared. Now I noticed the same problem as you have

Maybe Apple fixed your first issue in 10.9.4 but also caused the new issue!!

Thanks for your replies, it's useful to know someone else has the same issue.
