Calendars won't sync

Recently updated to Mountain Lion on the Mac and have had nothing but problems trying to get everything to sync. Now after my most recent software update on the iPhone, (to 7.0.3) I can't get my calendar to sync from the phone to the Mac but it works from the Mac to the phone. In other words, any event entered on my iPhone first will not show up in the calendar on my Mac but will show up if the event is entered on the Mac first. Likewise with deleting events. I am not using iCloud because that was a nightmare when I first updated everything, (it completely erased all of my calendars and contacts the first time I synced). All the settings on the phone and Mac jive. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
