when I press down on the keyboard light key, it won't turn on, and just shows a circle with a line through it to show that they aren't on. I can't turn them on at all

Reseting the SMC didn't work for me. 😟 Any other suggestions?
SMC reset didn't work for me either and i know longer have the backlight key option in my system preferences. This seems to require a fix from apple support to the Maverick OS if they can provide one. Backlight feature is a key one for me given the environments I work in sometimes as a theater professional. Need some help please!

Actually I feel a little stupid for not noticing this, but it was because my computer was in the light. I put my hand over the sensor on top of the screen by the camera, and then used the button to increase the keyboard light - it worked! If you want the keyboard to stay lit even during the day you have to turn off the dimming option in the keyboard settings. 🙂
