Q: iMac late 2013 + Mavericks + USB Sennheiser - input freeze

Hi

Since Mavericks i have a problem with my USB Sennheiser Headset.

When i connect it directly to the iMac, every time i start FaceTime or mumble, after 30 seconds? 1 Minute? the microphone get very noisy/scratchy.

After i attached an old USB 2.0 Hub to the iMac and connect the USB Headset to the USB hub, the Microphone is ok.

But after that i had 3 times freeze of all input devices ( usb Mouse, wireless magick mouse, wireless keyboard) in 6 hours.

I need to hard shutdown the system.

Last time i saw this error message in the log.

24.10.13 22:56:03,000kernel[0]vtd[0] fault: device 0:20:0 reason 0x6 R:0x1305000
24.10.13 22:56:03,000kernel[0]USBF:    9437.472    AppleUSBXHCI::UIMCheckForTimeouts - HSE bit set:15 (1)

Someone have some idea?

Thx

René

    fisihh,

Is the 10.9.2 beta stable otherwise? I'm in the developer program and might want to install it if it fixes the audio issue, which it sounds like it does.

Ehh. I just this last few hours split my fuston drive and I am in the process of moving things back.

But after running my drive for a couple of days using a external usb drive(The sound worked perfectly) once I swapped back I had a lot of isssues, Obviously related to user permissions in some way but nothing I tried seemed to fix them. Nothing major just minor stuff like it was unable to backup my Ipad/phone.

So I am doing a complete fresh install, given I have been constantly moving and upgrading the same software from machine to machine to machine since 1.0 it was probably time.

Just an update to my last post about 10.9.2 having apparently resolved the USB2/3 issues: It has now been 1 week with no further problems to report.

Thank you cdanr for the update!

    It's appreciated.

Any idea when that is supposed to be released officially?

I'm not registered as a developper so I didn't have access to it yet.

Sorry, I don't have any information on any potential official release dates, elaurin.

For the sake of everyone suffering with these problems, I'm hoping Apple will expedite it to their utmost ability.

Thank you so much for this forum.  I received a 27" iMac for Christmas and was experiencing the input lock about every 2 hours.  I use a Sennheiser headset and Kensington trackball that had no problems with my old 24" iMac. After working all day with Apple Support, who had never heard of this problem, and receiving instructions for more tests that would require an additional two days, we declared the iMac a lemon, returned it, and ordered a new one.

When using the old (returned) iMac, I was plugging my headset into the USB plug on the keyboard.  With the replacement iMac, I plugged the headset into a USB port on the back of the iMac and the freezes occur less often, though they do still occur.

I mention this in case Apple does read this forum and realize that perfectly good iMacs are being returned because of this problem.

Also, thank you so much for pointing out that 10.9.2 will fix this problem.

P.S. Dear Apple: As someone in a prior post suggested, it may behoove you to inform your Tech Support of this problem in order to save other customers from this frustration, not to mention avoid more unnecessary returns.

    Hi Ddori,

Of course Apple never heard of this problem.

They ALWAYS say that. It's actually the first thing they say whenever you report an issue.

They said exactly the same thing when I reported the very same issue.

And I'm sure they said exactly the same thing whenever all of the people using USB devices on their iMac called them.

I strongly believe it's part of their strategy in order to "buy time" and to make you think that you found a very new issue otherwise they would have fixed it quick.

In my opinion it's a very stupid strategy and users would prefer by far to know that Apple's engineers are aware of the issue and are working on it, as opposed to look like they keep ignoring all user reports.

They forget a big detail: we have forums and we know what is being found by others. The end result is their support personnel looks plain stupid.

I just hope they read forums once in a while, because this thread is a good example of users who are aware of what is going on, who can narrow down problems pretty well, and who would benefit from a better communication by the tech support at Apple.

It sounds to me that Apple is shooting itself in the foot with that dumb strategy. Some people get fed up and return their device for that reason.

Or, there's the other possibility, maybe Apple's tech support is actually plain dumb, which I prefer to believe is not the case.

They sure make it look like it though.

    Eric

    Hey,

Frank here and i have the same issues with some Usb Mics on my late 2013 iMac since Mavericks 10.9.1.

I talked 5 Times to an Apple support Member and he told me, that they not often watch in this Forum and that its better so write my Problem in their Feedback-formular....

So,....all of you, who have problems with their usb-mic-devices, please describe your Problem in This feedback.formular!!!!

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/

    What is my Problem?

At first i worked with the Rode Podcaster and after Mavericks the noise sound terrible,....sometimes after 4, sometimes after 10 minutes recording.

Here you can hear an recording-example:

    http://magneticweb.de/test.mp3

My First step was to buy me a new Rode Podcaster.....Result: Same Problems!!!

Than i bought me the USB Apogee Mic (Mavericks compatible) and the Problems are the same in Garageband, Facetime, Screenflow....!

Sometimes it works fine for a few minutes and than it makes scary noises!!!!

When i unplugged the mic and plug it into again,.....the Problem is away....for some minutes!!!!

I got this feedback from the Apogee developer....

    Hi Frank,

There is an issue with the USB audio in the new iMacs (and some other Macs using the "Haswell" processors) that is causing a slow degradation into distortion. It sounds like this is probably the same issue, and as you've discovered, it is affecting many makes and models of USB audio devices the same way. We have talked with Apple about it directly, and they are aware of the issue and there is a fix in the works.

Late 2013 iMac here.  Same problems.  I've tried 3 USB soundcards and a variety of headsets and still have no luck resolving the random "audio drop" problem.  So far what works best is plugging my USB headset directly into the back of the iMac (not the USB 3 hub).

Sounds like 10.9.2 should fix all of my ridiculous USB issues...I really hope it does!

Hi there. Have a late 2013 iMac here and experiencing similar problems. But I'm not sure if it is only related to USB audio devices. Is it possible that other types of devices (e.g. gamepads) also cause freezes? Especially when they are "in-use"?

    Regards

    Achim

Sure. I have a bluray drive. And if I connect it to the Mac the System freezes too.

Does it crash in the moment of connection or only when the drive is in use?

    Hi there,

talked to Apple Support today. The guy could not really help as I already tried almost everything. So this evening I cloned my FD to an external USB3 drive and booted from it. I ejected the internal fusion drive and what shoul I say: NO FREEZE ANYMORE with ALL of the "suspicious" hardware connected (Soundcard, Gamepad, Keyboard, ...).

Everything works well with this setup so I assume it's really an issue with den FusionDrive. Dropped an email to the support guy and looking forward to speak to him tomorrow...

Best regards to all of you - this thread was quite helpful with this issue
