I have two new Power Mac G5s that will only connect to my two Mac OS X servers, one an Xserve, the other a G5 running OS X server, under the Go/Connect to Server/command-K. If they attempt to browse for the the servers, they never appear in the Finder. Any ideas why?
Well, for a start, Go -> Connect to Server will only look for servers on the local network. You don't say if the servers are local or remote, but the problem could be as simple as that.
The Mac OS X servers are all local. We can use the Go> Connect to Servers and connect IP (or cmd-K). When we attempt to browse, the servers do not appear.
Try to connect manually by typing the IP to "Server
Address:" field.
afp://192.168.x.x/
This is the same as connecting with command-K at the Finder. Again, we can connect IP. When we attempt to browse for any servers, either nothing appears, or get the spinning color wheel forever. We are updated to Mac OS X 10.4.7 on the workstations.
First, have your new workstations been provided with the address of your local DNS (Domain Name Server), either by direct configuration or by including it with DHCP information passed out by your Router?
Next, on your new workstations, you can use the "Directory Access" Application to provide LDAPv3 (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) configuration information [at least the FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) of the Open Directory Master] and add that LDAP server name to the search path. This step will be needed if you expect to log on to accounts stored on the Server.
Curiously, my Mac OS 9 G4s can connect under Chooser AppleTalk with no problems. We do not have a DNS setup at our location. we get our DNS from a corporate server using an internal router IP address. There is no LDAP server setup locally. The servers they connect to are standalone.
