Mac OS X: How to quit an unresponsive application using Force Quit

That's AN answer, but not the right answer.  Shouldn't have to Force quit Mail to get it to close.

To the OP, I too am having this issue with Apple Mail on Mavericks.  After having Mail up for a few days, I can't close it without a force close.

Yep, I am having the same exact problem.

I agree the idea of having an app is also to be able to close it when desired by the standard method not have to Force quit.  what's up? 

My mail app wont allow me to quit it either

I have had this problem for a couple of years and have to force quit every other time or so, otherwise it just hangs and nothing happens. VERY frustrating and This has been happening since Lion... I am now using Mavericks. Same problem...

Same with me, as I posted elsewhere. Since Mavericks, Mail won't quit without a force-quit. I've done a database rebuild. There has to be a solution...

Same issue here.  15 MBP Retina Late 2012.  MacOS 10.9 and have installed the Mail Update for Mavericks to no avail.

I have iCloud email and two exchange accounts configured.  When I disable the iCloud account; force quit; then restart; it quits properly.   I've rebuilt the mailbox and have I'gone so far as to delete the iCloud account and add it back to no avail. 

Me two (-hundred and seventy three).... Grrrr....

Yes, i am having this issue too.  I can't quit my mail without force quitting.  This issue came after I installed mavericks.  I applied the new Mail update which mainly fixes gmail issues but didn't help.  I don't use gmail.

I have the same problem since Mavericks upgrade, but only for the main user. The second user does not have the problem. Removing apple.com.systempreferences.plist cures it for a bit, but it comes back to haunt me.

Nearly always occures after watching video.

Since I installed Mavericks, many of my apps require Force Quit in order to exit.
