What are .qtz files?

I was on my mac and I just got Mavericks. I was renaming the Red tag to "Random" and it put some random files in there. It put in Fire.qtz, Hearts.qtz, Hologram.qtz, Invisible.qtz, and iPod.qtz. I tried opening it and when it opened in QuickTime it didn't play anything it was just black. I dont know what .qtz files are. So what are they? And can I delete these files?

Hello Justin,

.qtz files are Quartz Composer files that are typically called by applications to affect graphical effects in applications. As these are files that coule potentially be used by the operating system or any variety of applications, it would probably be best to leave them in place.

Quartz Composer Track

Used to create motion graphics animation based on OpenGL, Core Image, and Core Video technologies. These animations are called "Quartz Composer compositions" and are stored in ".qtz" files.
