No notifications from Notification center for Messages app in OSX Mavericks

I just upgraded to OSX Mavericks, my Messages app works but I never get any notifications from Notification center about it. All options for Messages in the notification options are enabled though. Any help would be appreciated.

I likewise installed Mavericks two days ago, and have encountered a number of problems, some more serious than others.

As with Dr. Blair, notifications from the Messages app have suddenly stopped working. In other words, if someone sends me a message while I am in an app other than Messages, a notification of their message arriving is not appearing in the top right corner of my screen.

If anyone has found a solution to this problem, please advise.

Thank you very much.

Well, yesterday afternoon I ran Drive Genius from my external backup drive and used "Repair", followed by "Defrag". I also used Disk Utility to repair permissions on my internal Mavericks startup drive. Lo and behold, on-screen notifications appear to be working again in Messages. Whether or not this is a result of the things that I did, I am not certain.

However, other issues still exist, such as emoticons sometimes appearing, and sometimes not, either on my end, or on the end of the person I am messaging with.

It appears that I finally got my user picture/Avatar to stick by using the same image in Contacts, Messages and Users and Groups. I also enabled Bonjour in Messages.

Mail app is suffering even worse things, but I won't get into that in this thread.

Quite frankly, this is the worst OS update I have seen in a long time, and I am bewildered that Apple let this out the door in this state. I really like the new tabbed windows, but these other issues really dampen my enthusiasm for Mavericks. 😟

I have the exact same problem. It started out all fine, but now magically I don't receive any notifications (badge, sound or in notification center) when a new message has arrived. Thou I haven't changed anything in settings, I did check the notifications center and everything is on so I am guessing it's a bug.

To clarify, I do still receive mail notifications, it's only the Messages.APP which is blocking everything without a reason and it's frustrating because it's now completely pointless I have no idea when someone has send me a message only when I go check it manualy.

I am having the same problem, I am not getting a notification badge on the messages icon and notification centre is not displaying any notifications for new emails or messages, I am also not getting any banners in the top corner for messages or emails or any sounds when new messages arrive.

In the messages preferences 'play sound effects' is checked and I have selected a notification sound. In notification preferences Mail and Messages are selected as well as banner and play sounds.
