Q: Apogee Duet (1) not working on Mavericks

I had been on Snow Leopard and Duet worked fine. Upgraded to Mavericks, now it does not.

I plug it in initially (after reboot) and sound comes through the Duet. If I touch any volume control, the sound cuts out. In Maestro, the controls are all very finnecky, can't select any options. If I unplug and replug, still no sound comes through. Assuming it's a problem with Maestro compatability, but I've heard that Mavericks isn't really playing nicely with other non-apple hardware either. Suggestions?

Yep, looks like you were right.

Strange, after re-installing the OS it worked for a bit then the cracks came back. After updating last night again, everything seemed to work but today it's not. Super strange.

I did a series of tests and concluded that the problem is the FUSION DRIVE!.

By booting into my IMac 27 with external HDD the problem has never presented.

Probably there is a problem of synchronization between the SSD and the device driver and after a while not being able to manage everything starts to crackle and distorgere.

Unfortunately, this requires me to return to my new Apple iMac and get one without Fusion Drive.

    Hello,

We recently are aware of an issue occurring with USB audio on the newest Mac models. The hardware specific issue does not occur on Mac's produced prior to Fall 2013. This appears to be affecting USB audio interfaces from other manufacturers as well as Apogee's. Our Engineering team is working diligently with Apple to get this resolved as soon as possible.

    Hi All

I have eventually solved the problem by downgrading

my imac from Mavericks to Mountain Lion.

The strange things was that the apogee duet was working perfectly with my old imac but also with my macbook air running with mavericks. The last possibility was to test my new imac (nov 13) with Mountain lion and it works perfectly!!!

It really seems that there is an issue with all audio interface and the latest imac (maybe due to fusion drive) when running with mavericks.

    Hope this helps...

Do you mean that you were able to go into a new (2013) iMac 27 with Fusion drive Mavericks to mountain lion and that the sound problem is gone? For me it is important to know because tomorrow 12.27.2013 consign to my apple with these problems because I can not work! If I link my iMac to an external HDD with Mavericks sound problems are not there, I think the Fusion drive is the cause of the problem so I thought I'd go back to my mac and have it replaced with one with a 7200rpm disk hoping that it works well!

Switching sample rate to 192 kHz seems to fix the crackle and pops for me. still dont like having to do that....it should work whether its on the lowest or highest sample rate setting and vise versa....now my meters are displaying application master volume instead of the actual master volume i set by hand....

Yes this is what I did.

I have an Imac 27' with fusion drive that I bought early november.

I had the sound issue with the apogee duet with mavericks but now that i have downgraded to moutain lion the problem is gone. You should try this before switching to an other model. Maybe the issue is fusion drive + mavericks but not with fusion drive and mountain lion.

after apogee tech had me switch sample rate to 192kHz sound was clear for about 20 minutes and then began to crackle again...at one time before i just stopped testing completely it crackles for about 4 consecutive seconds...im sure this cannot be good for our monitors...i'm not even going to test anymore untill i hear a good solution for a fix...may even just have to return it and save my $ until i actually hear about a solution....its been like 3 months for some of you and ive read that most of you have had little to no help from apple or apogee...pretty unfortunate if you ask me...I've been getting some feedback from apogee but they could atleast keep me updated like once a week. i dont like being left in the dark especially after i invested over $2,000 on my imac and $700 on my duet ios for my music production...so far ive had little motivation to work seeing that the internal speakers are not that great and even though i have my headphones i want to use my monitors!!! i just want it to workkkk! haha >(

just received this reply from apogee. suprised i got a response so quickly...that makes me feel a little better.

    Hello,

We believe the issue is related to the Haswell Processor chip. This issue is affecting other audio interface manufacturers as well. We are working hard to find a solution with Apple. Unfortunately, I do not have a time frame for you.

Switching the samp freq should be just be a toggle and not left in the incorrect samp freq setting. Other than the manufactures ignoringing us the REAL problem is that there has not been a concern lodged from a "Big Fish". I dont not think Apple intends on addressing this issue anytime so at all. Apogee would rather have us continue to test for them and then suggest band-aids. If anyone can get to Electronic Musician, Mix or other it would be good to gat out some BAD PR about this!

It's not only with the new Macs, since Lion on my 2011 Mac Mini Server there are issues with Duet FW. If two apps are usining CoreAudio, there will be crackles and pops.

But since Mavericks QuickTime X is worthless because of the crackling. And the constant changing to different sample rate isn't an option - why then QuickTime 7 is still working fine? There's a big problem on the Apple side, not Apogee.

I could upgrade to SnowLeopard, where's everything working fine, but I got used to Logic Pro X and Mavericks. So if Apple is so serious about fixing Logic's issues (the 10.0.5 update was massive), they could also take CoreAudio issues more seriously.

Ok, I'm done with my ranting.
