i agree. Aperture is super speedy, but Preview is super slow! I would love to know if you figure it out.
Make sure there's enough free space on the disk..
Click your Apple menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
Slow in what way? Can you describe specifically what you mean? Are you doing Quicklook in Finder or opening them in Preview, and if the latter, what are you doing with them in Preview?
Slow mainly with .nef photos. (Nikon Raw)
Open a folder of .nef photos, highlight all, open with Preview.
Takes forever for them to load.
Once they do, clicking the down arrow for the next photo reveals the next photo after several seconds.
Mainly using Preview for initial review of raw images in a folder out of the Secure Digital Card.
In Mt Lion click the down arrow & you're looking at the next photo. Very little delay.
Over 60% of disk available.
Thanks for your reply.
I hope we do as well.
Preview was fast before Mavericks.
Unusably slow now.
The Preview window itself is jerky when going from full screen to smaller window & back to full screen.
Another symptom: Before Mav, highlighting 3 photos on desktop with mouse prior to open in Preview, photos would open in order highlighted. Not now. Seems to open them in random order.
BTW, Thanks for your reply.
Could it be Mavericks claim to fame power saving plan?
Photos not loading until down arrow clicked in Preview.
Maybe pre loaded when Preview opened in Mt Lion.?
Grasping here....
Thanks again.
I'm using JPGs and it's really slow. I'm referring to the Preview app instead of Quick Look in the finder. I use Preview because I can go though pictures and seperate quickly those that out of focus from the sharp pics. Quick Look is also slow.
Over half my SSD is free, so it's not space.
I attempted to use the Preview App from Mountain Lion, but Mavericks refused to let it run.
If I boot from my USB drive to 10.8.5 Preview is perfectly fine, even on the HD with Mavericks. I may just have to boot that way to sperate my pictures until a fix is issued or a setting is changed.
I'm also using preview to navigate my photos (usually in Canon Raw file (.cr2) + JPG) but yes, preview is very slow..
I have SSD and my storage is more than 80 % left..
I hope they fix it soon 😟
Same here - both preview and folder quick view very slow on raw pictures (Olympus). But ok with jpg photos.
Same problem over here.
I work with the canon raw file .rc2 and its very slow.
I use a 13" Macbook, Late 2008 with 8GB of RAM, 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
Was wondering if it could have anything to do with other programs we have on our machines?
Guessing...
I can confirm that it has nothing to do with our machines. I tried it on my daughter's brand new Macbook Pro 13 inch Retina that came with Mavericks preloaded (Intel Haswell I5 2.5Ghz with 8GB of ram). It was only a tiny bit faster than on my old 15 inch Macbook Pro (late 2008 model), still took about 2 to 3 seconds going from one photo to another with preview. My Olympus pictures in raw format are about 12MB each. I think it is just preview and raw photos. On Aperture, everything works fine. With jpg pictures, preview works fine as well.
