Old MacBook, new software

If I have a MacBook from 2009, and software 10.8.5(which was downloaded onto the laptop, did not come with it when I purchased it, it was an earlier version), will downloading OS X Mavericks slow it down, or make it faster?

We don't know. In general, Mavericks has got better performance than OS X Mountain Lion, but this may depend on your hardware and your applications. Before upgrading to Mavericks, make a backup of your files with Time Machine and check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com

Then, open the Mac App Store and download OS X Mavericks to upgrade Mac OS X. Note that during the first minutes, the OS X Mavericks performance might be poor because Spotlight is indexing the hard drive and OS X may be optimizing your computer
