Q: Unable to connect to network printer

After installing Mavericks i cannot print anymore on my network printer.

The printer has connected to a Windows XP pc, i see it under settings Windows printer but when i launch a print the printer goes into pause state. The message i see is "unable to connect to printer".

I had this connection since Snow Leopard > Mountain Lion and it has always worked.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I don't know if you guys have been 'googling' this 'filter failed' printing error, but I think this has nothing to do with Mavericks to Windows XP printing issue. Here are a few links that you guys may want to check out...

We use macs that use OS 10.9 connected to a pc server running Win Server 2008 R2. We cannot print using the new pages, numbers, keynote, calendar, mail, or preview to our Bizhub 342. It crashes giving us a pde error message. The tech for the Bizhub was here and there is no new driver. Reinstalling the old driver does nothing. Oddly enough we have an HP 4000 newtork printer that does just fine.

    Justin,

Your post, along with SQeek's a few above it, in combination, worked for me. I have an old Win XP box that is a dedicated print server. An HP 952c is on it.

I deleted and reset my printers first to start from a blank slate on my iMac.

On the WinXP box, I installed and enabled LPD per SQeek's instructions. No joy. Did another reset.

I then followed you alternate steps and it worked. I am using the "generic" HP drivers.

    Thank you both!

    Bob,

I can't explain why it worked for me, but it did. Maybe I just got lucky with the combination I tried. I have been without a printer for several days. My intent was to follow this thread from start to finish trying the tips in it. For me, it appears the combination of both tips removed my pause problem.

Using the LPD solution with Print Services for Unix worked for me!  Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for links, but unfortunatly they don't work for me.

There is a usuall name of my MBP in "Sharing", and there is no possibility to use epson original drivers, as far as they are too old, and don't work at Mavericks..

    When i try to print smth via lpd, i recive "Filter failed". And the log file "/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/Filter/rastertoescpII.app/Contents/MacO S/rastertoescpII ; exit;

    logout

    [Process completed]"

    Any ideas?

Something has changed with Mavericks and it's ability to print via Windows XP shares. There is no issue for Mavericks when printing via a Windows 7 and Windows 8 share, but with the printer shared by WinXP the 10.9 Mac is getting RPC errors, as shown in the cups error log.

    D [05/Nov/2013:14:01:44 +1100] [Job 16] rpc_open_printer: RPC error 0x16c9a060

    D [05/Nov/2013:14:01:44 +1100] [Job 16] RpcOpenPrinterEx returned 0xc002001d!

And this in turn results in the smb backend failing

    D [05/Nov/2013:14:01:44 +1100] [Job 16] smb backend (PID=427) stopped with status 256

    D [05/Nov/2013:14:01:44 +1100] [Job 16] smb backend will exit with status 1

    D [05/Nov/2013:14:01:44 +1100] [Job 16] PID 422 (/usr/libexec/cups/backend/smb) stopped with status 1.

    I [05/Nov/2013:14:01:44 +1100] [Job 16] Backend returned status 1 (failed)

With the end of WinXP support in April 2014, I'm not sure how much effort Apple will commit to resolving this. It may prove easier to update the XP PC to a newer OS or get a printer that has its own network port - either WiFi or Ethernet - so that you don't have to share it from a PC.

But many Mac users have a problem after upgrading to version 10.9. Maverick!!

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5480881?start=0&tstart=0

Conclusion: The problem is that in the new version 10.9, but not in Windows XP. ((( Users do not have to update Windows XP.

Please, return to the previous protocols to print out version 10.8!!!

As I said, your chances of Apple fixing this are slim. Windows XP is old. Mavericks is new and works fine with Windows 7 and Windows 8. So either update Windows, get a new printer or go back to 10.8.

After these responses came the idea that Apple has an agreement with Microsoft.

Users of Windows XP: only XP update to version 7 or 8. ((((((

I have a LaserJet 4000DN. Its an awesome postscript networked printer. I have not replaced the toner in two years, despite heavy use. I don't want to replace it. It works perfectly.

After upgrading to Mavericks, when I went to add the HP4000, the system wanted to install a generic print driver.

I googled "HP LaserJet 4000 driver for OS X 10.9" which pointed to this link to older software (OS X 10.5) on the HP website.

I downloaded a DMG file at that link titled HP_LaserJet_and_Edgeline_print-only.dmg

    I ran the downloaded installer.

I again tried to add the printer,  now displayed as "HP LaserJet 4000" in the pop-up list where previously only the choice 'Generic' was displayed.

I was warned that the installation 'needed repair' so I allowed the repair to proceed. This concluded successfully and the printer was added to my printer settings.

When I chose the "File->Print" menu option (from Firefox as a test), one of the pop-up menu options displayed in the same pop-up menu as Layout displayed HPPostscriptPDE with a strike-through.

Choosing this displays "The bundle couldn't be loaded because it doesn't contain a version for for the current archetecture".

The  pop-up menu option "Printer Features" displayed my usual assortment of printer-specific options when I selected the additional pop-up menu option "Feature Sets->General 2".

Choosing (for example) ProRes 1200 and Resolution Enhancement: Dark worked perfectly. PROBLEM SOLVED. Your milage may vary.

I'm saving / backing up the printer driver, because these things have a tendency to disappear from the HP website.

Same here. I worked fine with my Kyocera Mita FS1800 before upgrading to Mavericks. The printer is attached to a PC running Windows xp in a network. OSX recognizes the printer but when i send documents, i receive a message "unable to connect to the printer". I tried all but nothing. I work with these things, I hope Apple will fix this bug as soon as possible

Can't print from Mavericks to shared WindowsXP network printer, worked in Mountain Lion. Only workaround is to print to the same shared printer via an other Mac running 10.6.8.

I can install the printer in OSX, but using the printer results in "unable to connect to printer".

Thinking about installing Mountain Lion again.
