Mavericks drains my battery!

Macbook Pro 2012. I've read the comments and many others have the same issue. This has been going on now for 2 days, my battery used to have 9 hrs and is now down to 5 after doing a full charge. Not good. Is this another of Apple's scams? Please help!!

There is a HUGE distinction here about someone getting less batt. life in actuality or are they just reading the "time remaining" and using that as a true indicator which is certainly is not.

Ive seen 3 notebooks after SMC reset jump 4+ hours in "time remaining" and slowly climb after 3+ full charge cycles.

Until things settle down, nobody should trust what the time remaining says.

You mean you re-downloaded and re-installed the whole OS from the APP store? I wonder why one would have to go to these lengths to fix this problem. I'm going to wait a bit before I try that one...

In answer to Plotinus Veritas: "Until things settle down?" Come on!! Does Apple not test this stuff before putting it out into the world? I refuse to believe they don't know this is a common issue with MBPs (or any laptops as far as I hear).

Here's the point: OSX Mavericks is supposed to IMPROVE battery life. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't, what's sure is that it's giving pretty poor battery readings right now. And what I'd like to know, is why Apple isn't coming up with the right answers. Again, they must have tested this over and over again on countless macs from differing years, so what's the deal?

My Anecdote (seems to solve it for me).

2011 MBA, 389 cycle count.

After upgrading to Mavericks I noticed no difference in power usage & battery life.

However I have been using a 3rd party tool for my status bar battery:

https://github.com/codler/Battery-Time-Remaining

Reading about Mavericks upgraded battery monitoring I removed it and reenable the os x batter monitor in the status bar.

Very soon, by I noticed fans whirring and poor battery life (it didnt click at this point).

I check Activity Monitor and notice 2 tasks taking approx 99% cpu each (systemstats & kernal_task).

Reboots ensured - problem still there

Reset SMC - no change

This morning I remembered the battery tool and tried disabling the Mavericks battery monitor (in Energy Saver Prefs) and rebooting.

Problem instantly solved.

Ive gone back to the batty monitor I used previously on ML, and no problems.

(I now have 31% battery showing 1:59 left)

This seems to be the issue for me (I never got the service battry warning - but I did notice the tasks burnign up the CPU)

Hope this helps someone..

Was also having horrible battery life after upgrading to Mavericks on my 2012 MB Pro Retina. Would drain in 1.5 hours or less and the fan ran on high non-stop. Was made worse with the recent update to fix the Gmail issue in Mail.

For now seems resolved, although not the ideal solution; 1st rest SMC and then turned off Mail and Messages. Immediately, the fan stopped anf the battery life significantly improved. The downside... not using Mail or Messages. Hopefully, Apple will fix this.

Hi Joe -

The main solutions offered for this problem (recalibrate battery and resetting the SMC have not worked for me. I installed a brand new battery into my 2008 MacBook Pro and days later I upgraded to Mavericks and this brand new battery lasts about 30 minutes. And it's not just the percentage saying it's low. The computer really shuts off. After 30 minutes. I think my old, dying battery lasted longer than that!

I don't see a "battery monitor" in my Energy Saver battery options. I see the option to show the battery status in the menu bar. Is that what you mean?

I'm hoping some upgrade or fix comes soon!
