Just chatted with a customer service representative about the same problem and she suggested reset.

Here are the steps for anyone who wants to try:

    • For resetting the SMC, what we want to do is have the MacBook Pro powered off first. Then we want to:

      1. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.

      2. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.

      3. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.

      4. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

    • For resetting the NVRAM, we would just want to go through these few steps.

      1. Shut down your Mac.

      2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.

      3. Turn on the computer.

      4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.

      5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

      6. Release the keys.

Resetting the NVRAM usually resets settings such as Speaker Volume, Screen Resolution, Startup Disk selections, Time Zone information, and a few other settings.

Wondering if anybody has already tried reset? Has it helped?

anybody know whether you can disable the USB ports completly? This might be an idea, as I would assume shops do this anyway in order to protect the devices from getting infected with malware. If it is possible.

Day 2 of new rMBP 13" and had 4 freezes in 1 hour using firefox. Machine just been built as come from China so not stock from retail store that has been there for a week. This is not a rare occurance as Regent street store in London has had many people in over the past couple of days asking for refunds.

Hopefully the update shpuld be out soon or it has to be a complete recall

But have you had any more freezes? I am seeing the error; however, I have not had an additional freeze event  since the original one an hour or two after unboxing the machine on Sunday (I am sure I am going to jinx things). I did disable the powering down of the drives and the "wake for network access" setting (this one had caused me a lot of grief with my one my other machines under Snow Leopard).

No, no freezes, but that does not mean anything as people reported 2 or 3 days without them and then they had freezes again. Also, we were guessing how the store could "fix" the devices from showing that error.

I'm now 52 hours without a freeze due to having a USB unit plugged in (Garmin ANT+ stick).

Glad to see that Apple has owned up and is searching for the solution. Still debating on taking mine back to replace with a new one. I'm torn.

It seems very widespread, especially in light of people replacing it and having the same issues.

For those who see messages w/out freezing - mine took three days to freeze the first time. Then, happened three times in a day. Since then, usb plugged in and no more freezing at all.

i would not take back as mine is freezing and has come from china so must be more up to date than stock within a store

Just picked up an online ordered Macbook Pro from the Apple Store. 13/2.6/8/256. Hasn't frozen yet, but the kernel log was displaying the same error message as everyone else. After plugging in an USB mouse, the error messages have gone away.

    For now.

I was having the same error  3 or 4 times in a min roughly in the log until I logged in as Guest and no error message for 10 mins. This may be the reason rMBPs in the stores are not showing any error message in the console.

Well I can confirm that the Caffeine app' posited as a temporary solution a little while ago does not fix the problem -- just had another freeze with it running (cool lil' app though so that's something!) Back to having a USB key sticking out of the side...
