Hello Everyone.

The keyboard and the trackpad stops working including brigtness keys and volume control keys. i have use apple hardware test but no problem are found.

I'm also affected with the freezing issue, so I hope this will get fixed soon. Since I plugged in an USB2 device the machine hasn't frozen again (since 1.5 days).

The Haswell C1 is buggy, that's true as far I figured it out. I don't know why Apple used the buggy chipset, but as the C2 version was released in July 2013, I think they used the C1 as the C2 was not available during development of the rMBP.

The bug in the C1 is only affecting USB3-Flashdrives in combination with a special chipset from only one vendor, at least this is said in the articles I've seen so far. Affected drives are remounted after the computer wakes up from sleep, so there could be error messages with open files on the drive.

Also some articles mentioned that some vendores add own USB-controller chips to the boards and disabled the original ones. Maybe Apple did this as they know about the problems with the original USB3-chipset.

Nevertheless as this is an issue with USB3-Flashdrives, I don't think (hope/believe) it's the problem we're facing right now.

    Dear Friends,

i wrote in this thread from the beginning, and i think that now we are a little paranoic...

I have rMBP late 2013 13" 8GB, 256GB and it locked only one time during second day, i was using Safari...

After that i found this forum and it is very nive for all of us. I initialized my rMBP and i had a clean system, Permission repaired and now after 6 days no freezing anymore ( yes i didn't connect any usb device ).

I stressed my laptop in different way but no freeze... I opened a file using pages in an external drive, put in stop, awake again and the file was there, ready to continue...

I increase Brightness up to 100%, 80% but no buzzing noise, my MBP is noiseless...

I tested my Retina monitor with a static image and no retention issue...

So at the end it is very very good Laptop but you all know i think that it can lock because one time i saw with my eyes!!!

I called two times Apple Store:

    - First time they were no aware of this issue.

    - Second time (Today) they are no aware of the issue but i say there is a communication from Apple... If i want i can have back my money.

I use Apple products from long time ago, ( dear Steve J. we miss you), and the only question that i would to do is:

"Dear Apple, we spent a lot of money, why don't you inform us what is really happening so we can live in peace with our piece of aluminium ?"

That is my opinion and i don't think that it is an hardware issue, yes no hardware, if you connect a f******* external drive it works without freezing... I think that we have a different hardware but no failed...

That's only my opinion but countdown is going...

How did you do this / what did you do exactly? I'm willing to try this on my machine if I don't have to reinstall all applications Otherwise I have to wait until next week when I have more spare time.

Forgive me if this is a daft question but if this a problem with the chips, do the 13" models have different chips in them to the 15" models (which don't seem to be having as many problems at this point)?

    Switch on and press cmd+R

    Disk utility --> initialize HDD

    Reinstall Mavericks (13A2093 again)

You need to reinstall all apps

    Repair Permissions

very interesting! did you re-install mavericks from the recovery partition?

also, can you check in your console for the frequency of the message about 'XYZ may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup'? it appears that if the message is spamming your log (appearing repeatedly every few seconds), it might be a symptom of a possible freeze.

if you instead don't have the spamming message - or if you have it only when you wake up the machine, as happens for example on my early 2008 mac pro running 10.9 - it might be that this procedure 'fixed' whatever was wrong on your machine.

I made a reply yesterday concerning Pages freezing which I solved, and made the comment that I thought the Track Pad was iffy but have a dislike of Track Pads [Windows Laptop experience] and naturally use a USB attached mouse. This morning the Trackpad would not work upon starting the MBP 13" Retina to allow me to log-in. I had to plug in & use the mouse which enabled me to log in.

The trackpad & keyboard worked fine after I had logged in.

I have not had the keyboard freeze yet.

A dissappointing start to my first MAC!

    HI All,

My macbook just freezed this morning. A fix has not been released yet but i hope to expect within a few days. Apple is aware of this issue though!

For what it is worth, just had a call back and an email from Apple Technical Support in Ireland. The guy said he has been told this is definitely not a hardware problem and the patch/fix is imminent.

Well, we will see ... I suppose it is wise to be sceptical; but I have decided to keep my new 13' rMBP for now. It seems to me either the fault is with software or firmware, in which case Apple with release the fix soon; or the fault is with the hardware, in which case they will have to do some kind of recall, rendering the usual conditions of the 14 day return policy inapplicable -i.e. the MacBooks are materially faulty and we will be covered beyond 14 days by our statutory warranties.

By the way, I am now on day three with no freeze at all ... tempting fate, I know, but there you go.

I think this is a hardware fault, because

    a) he is using ML

    b) a hard reset of the MBA did not resolve the issue

He didn't say how old his machine is... my guess would be a defective hardware which has nothing to do with "our" issue.

13"/8/256 new MBP, OS X newbie. How to download Mavericks on my machine. I've read some articles, and followed their leads. Still, could not able to download. I want this to install a fresh OS in case my machine will show the same problem.
