Q: New Retina Macbook pro 13 Haswell system hang/unresponsive

Hello Everyone.

I have just got my new macbook pro retina 13 Haswell (October Model). This is my second day of usage and i have encountered sudden system freeze for 2 times already. The keyboard and the trackpad stops working including brigtness keys and volume control keys. i have use apple hardware test but no problem are found.

Could anyone tell  me what is going on or having the same issue?

    A lot of confusion here!

    The C1 stepping thing:

Apple MacBooks dont have a north or a southbridge. It is partially integrated in the CPU/GPU itself. See this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_Controller_Hub . The CPU used in the MacBooks are the following:

    http://ark.intel.com/products/75990/Intel-Core-i5-4258U-Processor-3M-Cache-up-to -2_90-GHz

    + http://ark.intel.com/products/75991/Intel-Core-i5-4288U-Processor-3M-Cache-up-to -3_10-GHz

    and http://ark.intel.com/products/75992/Intel-Core-i7-4558U-Processor-4M-Cache-up-to -3_30-GHz

As you can see, they are all manufactured in Q3 '13. Intel nor Apple are developing a faulty CPU TODAY!

Intel announced a Product Change Notification (http://qdms.intel.com/dm/d.aspx/C79FC2E6-6B75-4063-8687-660F4668FFC8/PCN112101-0 0.pdf). Somewhere in there is written that this issue affects only the Intel 8 Series/C220 Series Chipsets (which are Northbridges)

That doesnt mean it isnt a HW failure but the C1 thing is so stupid...

My guess, it is a driver problem.

Also I do not think Apple starts the production of such a device and then leaves it all alone.
Bad assembly would have been recognized much more early, I assume.

I personally think, the guy didn't want to say "I don't know what it is". Some people have a problem with that. It hurts their ego. So he simply had to say, he knows what it is (before Apple knows it, as he is smarter anyway, although Apple hasn't realized that yet ...) and since he is the hardware tech guy, it's hardware.

Unless more people report that they have been told the same, I put this under "some guy wanted to talk smart".

Thanks a lot for clearifying this. Hopefully, the c1 stepping topic is now finished.

Thanks Oli.S72, do you think the unresponsive keyboard and trackpad is related to CPU?

No he understood, I made a point of

Telling them about the discussion forum

And that many units were reporting problems.

They knew exactly what I was talking about.

I still guess it is related to power management of the operating system maybe in conjunction with a buggy driver.

I still doubt at this point that it is hardware related. Too many devices are affected for something like this. If it is hardware, it sure is not assembly. If it's hardware, then it's a broken hardware by design.

Bad assembly ober thousands of devices, over one week, Apple knows about it, tells the tech guy in that store but noone else? That all sounds a little too far off for me personally.

So you are suggesting that thousands of, if not all, new 13 rMBP have hardware issue and Apple will recall them?

did Apple staff mention any further action/remediation plan from Apple?

    Thanks

Yes, but was it his personal opinion? Or an official statement from Apple?

I think, he had heard of the problem and simply thought "okay, this sounds like bad assembly to me". Has he in any way mentioned, that he was informed by other people from Apple, that this is bad hardware?

I give you another reason why I think it isnt an HW issue. If apple figured out what causes the problem, do you really think apple is continuesly shipping more units if it is an HW issue? Mine was just shipped...

This week i looked at iFixit Teardown of new MBP 13 Late 2013 and they said that it was well assembled. They are good technician and if it was not assembled in the right way it would had been highlighted...

My guess is you are correct. (not a hw issue)

I was about to order the new rMBP 13in just before hearing about this issue - for all of you who already have the new rMBP and face this issue - really only thing you can do is use the usb method quickfix for now, usb mouse or from what I've seen online so far, just any pendrive/usb stick, until Apple hopefully just needs to put out a software/firmware update.

On the off chance that the issue is in the hardware somehow, not that I think this is likely, I will personally hold off with ordering my own copy for my own peace of mind until this issue is clearly taken care of and no longer a problem for everyone.

It is a shame though, it was going to be my first macbook and I was really looking forward to switching to it from using Windows all my life after having been using my brothers older 2012 11in Air for a few days.

and I give you another reason why I think it is not bad hardware assembly: how could plugging in an USB device prevent the freezing? If the touchpad was badly assembled, what would an USB memory stick attached to the macbook change on that? Does not make sense to me at all.

... i don't think that it is an hardware issue, yes no hardware, if you connect a f******* external drive it works without freezing... I think that we have a different hardware but no failed...

That's only my opinion but countdown is going...

I also think that as i wrote some days ago
