I was surprised too that this is supposed to work, but my support guy told me so. Since I was in doubt, I asked him again, whether it's really no problem to return it to the store even though I bought it online and he answered no, no problem within the first 14 days.
I will ask that tomorrow at my local store. I might even go to two stores and ask the same questions twice. (we have two stores quite close) I bet I will get totally different answers ... want to bet?

Well actually he seemed very sure of what

He was talking about, in fact he said an employee bought

One & brought it in for the same issues.

They knew exactly what I was talking about.

Alright so I waited 2 years for this macbook pro to be launched. I went to apple retail store in UK, and they said to me it's out of stock because there is 1000s of people requesting that model. I wanted the 13" macbook pro retina 256gb with 8GB memory. I wanted this laptop so bad so i called apple every day to check the stock (i hate buying laptops online because of a previous issue occure with me) and then I decided to call a retail store which is not in my area. Once i said : " i want to check for the 13" macbook pro retina, the guy told me just don't buy it yet! " there are some issues with the trackpads and keyboard with these laptops. He said to me that apple pulled all the stock from the shops. So i guess that if it was a software issue, then apple wouldn't withdraw all the 13" rMBP from retail stores. I added this comment because I though it could be helpfull and to point that, in my opinion, this is a serious hardware issue...

So they pulled all the stock from the shops but still ship within 24 hours if you buy online?  Sounds like the guy you spoke with was a little overzealous with his story.  If Apple had internally communicated this as a serious hardware issue that will result in a recall, there's no way the product would remain for sale online.  I'm not saying this couldn't turn out to be a major hardware issue, but in this instance I'd take his opinion with a pinch of salt.

I think you guys are making things up. I just chated with 2 different tech advisors on apple.com and they 100% assured me it is a software issue and that a fix is on the way.

    Same issue here.

I just got my MacBook Pro 13", and I had experienced this issue twice in less than 15 minutes while sufing the internet (first one Harvard.edu and second one CNN.com).

I downloaded the Flash Player software before the freezes.

Hope this is just a bug and is fixed with an update.

I repeat: I just chated with 2 different tech advisors on apple.com and they 100% assured me it is a software issue and that a fix is on the way.

Well I had the same opinion about the guy that talked to me lol! And yes i asked him how will apple be able to dispatch it within 24 hours? He replied that apple online have another stock then ours and maybe the problem is fixed with their stock. At this stage i knew that this guy is lost.  But i end up buying it online and have been stuck with the trackpad issue for 3 days.

I bought mine online, delivered last Thursday and had around 6 maybe 7 freezes so far.  Lots of people on here buying from either online or Apple Stores all around the globe.  I'd rule out any batch issues or localized stock problem.  With a bit of luck we'll get a definitive answer from Apple soon, although I doubt much will happen over the weekend.  Hopefully a software fix, but if it's hardware then the hassle of the recall process will ensue.

I just got off the chat support and the tech told me I should return my macbook while it's still in the 14 day warranty.

That is odd. I spoke to two second level tech support people and they said it is a software issue.

I have this problem also on the new 13" Retina model, I just picked it up about a week ago. In maybe 20 hours of internet surfing I have had four lockups. The only way I can proceed is to hold the power key and do a hard shutdown.

With so many people having this issue I am sure it is a software problem, I hope they get it fixed soon.

If this is a hardware issue I will be seriously ****** off. I've just moved to a town in Mexico that doesn't have a post office let alone an Apple store.

He didn't say whether it was hardware or software, just "at this point I would be looking at returning the machine and getting it replaced" Who knows if the replacement will have the same problem.
