Hello Everyone.

I have just got my new macbook pro retina 13 Haswell (October Model). This is my second day of usage and i have encountered sudden system freeze for 2 times already. The keyboard and the trackpad stops working including brigtness keys and volume control keys. i have use apple hardware test but no problem are found.

Could anyone tell  me what is going on or having the same issue?

Some more words for all people that are in panic now because their 14 days are over soon:

Assume, the problem is related to hardware. (it is very unlikely from my perspective, but let us play the devil's advocate here for a minute)

    - If it can be fixed through software, you will get an update and your rMBP will work as expected from there on. All will be good. (I am not speaking here of a hardware defect. I am speaking about a hardware design that is out of specs or something alike.)

    - If it can not be fixed through software, what do you (seriously) think, Apple will do? Do you really think, Apple will tell you that unfortunatley you have a device that freezes from time to time, but you are out of luck, because 14 days are over and now you will have to live with that? How realistic does this sound to you? If it can not be fixed through software, Apple will fix it by doing a recall. You will most likely get a new device. All will be good.

Guys, try not to panic. There is no reason for panic. If only 2% of the devices would be affected, I might  speak different. But it seems all customers of 13" rMBP are affected. This means, Apple has to (and will) come up with a clean solution to get out of this.

Let's continue my experience. I read that people have also problems with audio, if they remove external speakers or headphones no audio anymore... I tried this but my laptop works well...

Another consideration, i had only one freeze in 7 days, please can you also add any information about app or ststus in use when your rMBP freezes ?

I am trying to lock my rMBP but after re-installation of Mavericks and permissions repaired i had no freeze... (13A2093)

It does not seem to be related to applications at all. Many people (including myself) experienced the first freeze during or right after initial setup process.

The headphone issue might be something happening 1 time out of 500. So trying this once or even a few times will tell not much.

As stated before, we had many many posts like "I did this and no freeze since then". This always was due to coincidence only. Other people tryed that method and had freezes. The only known and proved solution to work is to plug in an USB device. There is strong evidence that points to that the same applies to connecting a device via bluetooth. (Would make sense since it is the same USB hub internally)

Yes i know, but i want to collect more information and i explained why:

A lot of people say that they have freeze during initial setup process, and many others using Safari. But for example had anybody a freeze using pages? Or let me say using Photoshop, Pixelmator... Just to collect more info and see if there is a common point...

We need to wait mommy Apple and in the same time i want to understand if possible difference between our MBP and the others...

Yestarday at Apple Store i saw that only the new rMBP Late 2013 13 inch had this kernel warning, all the other new and old and air and 15 Retina and no Retina had not this log...

I'm not trying to be alarmist but Apple do have a history of issuing software patches that fix hardware problems but also reduce performance - EFI patches that agressively throttle GPU performance etc. With that in mind I've returned mine and will wait it out until Apple are more forthcoming with information.

Yes, people reported freezes during using Pages as well. Trust me, it is not application-related. It is not reproducable as well. No common point. Read the 94 pages of this thread and you will see for yourself.

Yes, you did see right, the kernel message appears on 13" rMBP only - but you keep on repeating stuff that is long time known and repeated here in this thread many times before.

I know all 95 pages and i don't repeat anything, i am only collecting informations or more specific informations.

I trust only that i see... i didn't ask to you...

    That's all.

just spoke with munich apple store on phone and the guy told me they do not have heard of any issues with the 13 inch model yet. i gave him detailed information about the problem, the thread here and the people complaining all over the world. he said nobody in the store heard a thing about it and nobody told them to stop selling their stuff.

i do not believe they dont know about it but at the flip side i hardly think it is a hardware issue cause then they would stop selling it. i asked if there is a way to extend the 14 days period just to give apple a real chance to fix the problem. he told me to speak with apple care about this and i will do this today and post the result here.

as i wrote here days ago i had graphic glitches with my 13 inch late 2013. maybe 4 times, very tiny and very short.

i did a research in google and i found tons of messages people complaining about graphic errors with mavericks with any kind of apple computers. i cant believe my hardware is faulty. again, i think it is just mavericks.

thanks to all that are running to their local stores to check out the specs. this is great support, my store is unfortunately 50 km away from me.

    Hope this helps you

I worry that Apple may push a software patch to mask a hardware problem.  This problem may crop up again in other operating systems.  Wish we could hear from people running Windows on these devices.

Boot camp is an official product from Apple. Apple knows a lot of people want or need to run Microsoft Windows on their devices. So it is no real option to mask a serious hardware bug through software. Adjusting the bounds of some specs might be an option, but masking a serious bug is not.

For those of us entirely new to these problems it might be worth placing the issue of an eventual recall due to hardware issues in context. Here is a link to how Apple dealt with a problem with a year's worth of MacBook Airs recently. Note, at the bottom, the three year window to have the machine looked at:

    http://www.apple.com/support/macbookair-flashdrive/

I have had two senior Apple tech people tell me that this is software, not hardware. IMO the tech support people do not really know one way or the other and are emphasising customer service.

My seasoned - some of the them very seasoned - Mac-user friends are saying wait and see what Apple does before acting.

One final thing, the staff in my local Apple store in the UK claim not to have heard of this problem at all.

Happy I stumbled over this thread just seconds before I hit the order button to order a new 15 inch MBP. For sure, I won't order one now before this issue is solved – and not by a patch that degrades the overall performance.

It also makes me sad that

    • if you only build a limited number of laptop configurations
    • almost entirely control the software run on your hardware
    • build a laptop in which almost nothing can be replaced
    • sit on the biggest pile of money on the globe

you're unable to find issues like these before shipping.

At least, I hope it's that's what it is. The alternative is even worse. Perhaps the issue was spotted by QA before shipping, but there is something wrong in Apple's internal communication structures. Or even worse, perhaps they *did* know about the issue, everybody was aware of it, but they already decided they would fix these things later with an OS update, and perhaps the OS update required to deal with this is harder than they figured.

BTW, that also means that all of the benchmarks people are doing right now are basically worthless. If they do need to make significant changes to the OS, then all of those numbers might change.
