I have the same problem. It happened twice yesterday after several hours. This is very annoying! What should I do?

plug in an USB device, such as an USB mouse or an USB memory stick. This will prevent your device from freezing the keyboard/touchpad. And then wait for the update from Apple. Or return your device to Apple. It's your decision and both ways are perfectly alright.

"He said that apple is working hard to fix this problem and is trying to publish a software update in about 2-3 weeks."

OK, will be returning this laptop early next week then.  First and last Mac I have ever owned.

Apologies for the duplication but it seems some people have missed what was said a few posts up.

Apple's official admission of an issue and that they are working on a fix and that for the time being they recommend closing the lid, wait a minute and try again.

"...trying to publish a software update in about 2-3 weeks."

Is this a joke? Such a critical bug should be fixed 3 months ago at "Quality Control" or extensive user testing stage, not 2-3 weeks after release

no explanation, no hotfix - this is not good for Apple reputation

Although Mavericks went through numerous Developer Previews (betas) the fact that the new hardware has only been available to non-Apple personnel for barely a few days presumably explains why this issue seems very device specific.

Unfortunately I ran out of time and couldn't go. But I think the value of information that can be get at an Apple store is quite small anyway. Maybe I will give them a call on monday and try to get somebody competent talk to me.

That is all too true, I find the Apple techs at the stores to be really dumb, but I work with IT so then again maybe I just know more. From my experience this is a software issue, but it is hard to figure out why the Apple employees are claiming it is a hardware issue - perhaps they just don't know what they are talking about and option #1 is just "Oh yeah, just get another one."

    About the 2-3 weeks:

We had the support telling us
    a) it is software, wait for an update

    b) it is hardware, return your device

    c) never heard of this

    d) Apple knows about it

now one(!) support guy speaks of 2-3 weeks for a software update to come along and you take this as an official statement?

    How does this guy know?

Does he know it from the same source as the senior technical a few pages before who knew all about the problem and knew for sure it was bad hardware assembly?

    What is fact?

Fact is, people who work with the new 13" rMBP are now in the situation that they might experience loosing hours of work under rare circumstances.

Imagine just as an example some non-tech normal mid-life customer buying the new 13" rMBP for writing a novel. After installing Pages and writing for 5 or 8 hours, suddenly the device is not responding anymore.

This person will not even understand the device has not crashed, but simply lost connection to the input devices. This person might turn off his or her device because he or she does not know better. And important work or information might be lost. In this example, creative work that might be unrecoverable at all might be lost.

So this is a serious problem. On this board the people know what to do to prevent the freezes. They know what to do if the freeze occurs so no work is lost. But there are many people out there who do not have a clue about all that. They bought a device that is supposed to just work.

You think Apple does not understand all this?

I do not believe Apple does not understand how serious this topic is. I do not believe they sit back and relax. I believe they work very hard on this and will release an update/hotfix asap.

Of course, it would be bare horror for Apple if the update would turn out to fix this problem, but create two new ones. So of course, it has to get tested as good as possible. Testing needs time. Sometimes it takes even more time than the actual coding.

Personally I think, Monday 4th would be fast. Wednesday would be still quite good. Friday is what I hope and personally expect from a company with Apple's values. Everything later than next Friday would not really match the claim to build the best computers in the world and give the best possible user experience.

Received 5 days ago - how many hours of usage do you have all together by now, approximately?

You have no USB devices plugged in? No bluetooth-mouse connected or something alike?

Your feedback is highly appreciated. Thanks for the info

There is no need to loose work. Plug in something to your USB port. A mouse, a memory stick, anything. As long as you have something plugged in to your USB port, your rMBP will not freeze.
